Anderson Silva Won the title in 2 fights in a much shallower MW pool back in 2006.
But the only fighters who went from unranked to winning the title in the same calendar year or Pereira and Van

Cuz when an elite kickboxer comes in we truly don’t know just how good he’s going to be, if his tdd holds up, or his ground game etc etc. I nabbed him when he was 1-0 in the UFC and took 2 rounds to take out a Greek nobody. We still didn’t get enough information a few months later only winning a decision against Bruno Silva, that’s been ktfo several times. It took to knocking out Strickland, then Izzy in the same year to know something.

I certainly never envisioned him winning the belt in the same year and thought it would take a couple of years at the very least.

I remember his takedown defense being a question at this level back in 2021....and sure we all knew how good he was in GLORY but almost nobody goes from being unranked in the UFC to winning the Title in under 12 months.

Nah... It took Izzy almost 2 years before he became undisputed champ.( Although he did win an interim belt after 14 months)

Well. To be clear it's a 1 year-long season. But after you draft your squad you only need to manage about once every 2 months during transfer/trade window...

In fairness to Anderson, he was already a household name globally and wouldn’t have taken long before he got a title shot anyway. Fought in Pride but when he was the champion in Cage Rage he took out 4 former UFC veterans(one including Lee Murray).

Pereira was a name in kickboxing but not proven in mma at the time yet, whereas Anderson already was, although he got beaten a few times before his unreal run in the UFC. I predicted to my friends when he fought Leben he would beat Chis easily, then beating Rich Franklin and will be champion. I remember one of them laughing, rolling his eyes and saying yeah yeah. Honestly, some people just never listen.
 
Mannnn... Malcolm Welllmaker went from a shoe in top 10 Pick to questionable if he gets drafted at all.
