THANK YOU for using the word Bully! It's been given such a wretched reputation here in North America that no one uses it except as a noun and it's tiring. When I lived in Nevada (irrelevant side note, but please stop your friends from pronouncing it "nuh-VAWH-duh." No one says it that way. It's "Neh-VAh-duh," the VAh pronounced like "vat."), there was a popular and rousing chain of sports bars called "Bullys." When bullying became the battle cry of every pulpit in the nation, Bully's, one by one, closed.

Why not change their name? I have no answer for that. All I know is that the remaining sports bars were trash, and it was the beginning, in Northern Nevada, of PC madness.

LMFAO, yeah, that's not true at all about Bullys and "PC Madness"

Having ALSO lived there, Bullys tanked for REAL business reasons:

1) Nevadas clean air act, so you couldn't smoke in a restaurant any longer. That meant they had to launch "Smoking Bullys" to keep their gaming/slots customers, which strained their cash flow right as...

2) the great recession, which forced them into a bankruptcy restructuring. (The real kiss of death and beginning of the end)

3) the class action lawsuit in the middle teens forced them to pay out money, and damaged their reputation in already saturated market (damaged them and killed any positive momentum they'd regained)

And if you HAD any sort of actual connection to the area, you'd know full well that when they became cash strapped from all of the above, the quality of the food dipped substantially. They used to have great pizza and wings and burgers, but after the bankruptcy and other troubles, the food could barely be called bland. THEY were the trash sports bar and the others were way better, as anyone there would actually attest.

And there being no shortage of sports bars in the area (Sparkys, Flowing Tide, BJ's Brewhouse, Buffalo Wild Wings even!!!) customers walked away until the owner eventually sold to the corpos, who kept closing locations.

Had absolutely fucking NOTHING to do with the name. Ffs, when they sold in 2024, the new corporate overlords INTENTIONALLY KEPT the name Bullys for the name value, which they wouldn't do if ANY of the bullshit you posited was true.

Clown ass victim, always peddling your look-at-me bullshit 🙄

Bad part... This... is all correct. Can't fight that. Straight facts. Some facts I knew, others I had to look up, also found there was some stings that happened, that they were caught selling alcohol to underage volunteers.

That will tank your business fast, nobody likes to see that you're attempting to gain lifelong customers, by kickstarting an addiction early, especially one as horrible to rid as drinking.

So... beast mode crete. Keep that shit up! That was an awesome read.

Homie is also right about pc getting huge around that time, but that's also because of a lot of laws nevada itself was passing at the time, which made people want to move away and to in cases (much more away though). Nevada was always a 'safe space' for people to get away and not worry about the dumbness of the world. From politics, to work, to family issues.. people went there to get away... taking that from them.. was an issue. Especially the freedom to say how you felt about certain issues.

To be clear, yeah, the PC stuff in Northern Nevada is a real thing and is incredibly annoying.

That place has always lived in a weird spot: it's REALLY close to California, like minutes away, so there has always been a fair amount of Californians who move there for the tax benefits (about 50,000 a year inflow, because no state income tax versus like over 13%). And they obviously bring their politics with them, so that definitely influenced the PC shit a lot.

So you get native Nevadans on one hand, an increasing Cali transplant population, all being squeezed into a spot that has notoriously corrupt leadershi, and an infrastructure very ill-equipped for that volume of people. Housing costs are insane over there right now, it's a mess. All that shit is why I moved away.

I vaguely recall a Bullys in Reno.

Reno is fucking huge. I picked up my dog there. Exited 80 then drove at highway speed for another 45 min and was still in Reno. WTF?!!?!?!?!?

Ah yes, massive massive Reno... The *checks notes* Biggest Little City in The World!

With a truly massive population of...500,000.
