The wheels may be in motion for the first UFC "superfight" since Georges St. Pierre took on then lightweight champion B.J. Penn at UFC 94. When St. Pierre takes on Carlos Condit on November 17 at UFC 154, middleweight champ Anderson Silva will be cageside.
MMA Fighting says that it could very well be to challenge GSP after the fight:
Silva's manager, Jorge Guimaraes, hinted to MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani on the Tuesday night edition of Fuel TV's UFC tonight that a challenge is forthcoming if St-Pierre defeats Condit.
Asked why Silva, who isn't known to often show up at fights other than his own, is heading to Montreal, Gumaraes said "maybe to challenge GSP if he beats Condit."
Of course, beating Condit remains a might big "if."
GSP is coming off a major knee injury and hasn't been in the cage since April of 2011, a 19 month layoff. Expecting him to come back in top form and beat a very, very talented Condit may be asking too much.
It will be interesting to see if the UFC would try to pursue a champion vs. champion superfight between Silva and Condit, if they'd choose to go with a Condit vs. GSP rematch or if they'd let Condit start defending his title against other welterweight champions.

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
If Condit wins, there's no way the UFC tries to do a Silva/Condit "super fight". I'm a big Condit fan, but people are on the fence about Silva/GSP. There's no way fans get behind Silva fighting Condit "just" by him beating a 19 month lay-off GSP. Yes, I put just in quotes because it would still be a huge accomplishment.
If Condit wins, Silva fights Weidman/Boetsch or Jones next.

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
Anderson needs half of the UFC to consider moving up to face Jones yet he will be cage side drooling over a 170 lb opponent.

It's about the money. Silva wants the green and I suspect he thinks GSP after injury and rehab is the easier fight.
This isn't about legacy, proving who's the best or P4P greatness. It's greed.
I think my interest in seeing this fight just increased.

I also think that the mentality that Nelson is trying to convey to his fighters is wrong. Dana is their employer and he's telling them flat out, be more exciting or you're not getting into the UFC. And there Nelson is telling them to go for the 100k, even though only one person can get that. I think I'd be listening to the person who writes the cheques, not the fat-arse with a manky beard.

Contender, did you mean to put this in the TUF thread?

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
It's a known fact that GSP does the best PPV numbers by far out of anyone. That's why Anderson wants that. More dough to dispose of the second longest reigning UFC champ ever.

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
If GSP has signed on to the superfight or has hinted that he's interested in it, this is fine. But if he's not, then this is a pretty classless move by the UFC to pressure one of their least problematic champions into a fight he doesn't want.

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
Yeah AS definitely prefers GSP over Jones thats for sure, I have no idea why though as I think he could KO both of them and Jones is the bigger prize for Silva in terms of becoming the GOAT.
Whatever though I would still be happy to watch GSP/Silva, I think it would be awesome to see what GSP could against him if anything at all.

Its about the money? If he wanted money he'd fight Jon Jones, that'll earn him a lot more than fighting GSP. Not that this won't earn him much but Dana would probably offer him a lot more to fight JJ.

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
I'm posting this from a "what if" perspective. I'm not a big time poster, just like to read what ppl are talking about. But this got me thinking...
I don't know how the UFC wins out in this situation if Anderson loses to GSP. If he does lose then your invincible MW champ is destroyed imagewise by losing to the WW champ. Yea you make a huge payday on ppv buys and ticket sales, but a loss for Anderson would be incredibly damaging to his brand in my opinion in the short term. I mean, how does he continue to defend his title when the lighter guy below him is "better" and how does the UFC promote him after a loss like that? I think this fight presents more problems from a business side for both the UFC and Anderson than positives. A motivated GSP isn't an easy out and painting him into a corner after a fight isn't cool, unless he really wants the fight.
Although, the points I just made are for nothing if/when Anderson wins...

GSP has always been the highest grossing player for the UFC. Jones has never been paid more (he made the same as GSP in JJ's last fight) nor is his PPV average on par with Georges.
In fact, Silva will probably make the same purse regardless of who he fights; Jones or GSP. With a locker bonuses for a win, I'd wager he's more likely to beat GSP and this make more money off fighting the smaller guy.
It is about the money.

I can't be the only one that thinks challenging someone that weighs less than you is a chump move. Go challenge Jones you scrub. The point is for you to challenge yourself, not challenge others.

they were willing to risk it with Vitor and Jones........and now sonnen.
Silva won't lose his "brand" if he loses to GSP........still an exciting fighter.
Add in that Silva only has 2 fights left on his contract............this is a high profile fight inorder to renegotiate a bigger and better deal

GSP can fight the likes of BJ and Serra, but Silva wanting a fight that a few years ago EVERYONE wanted is a chump move?

Re: Anderson will be cageside for GSP/Condit; plans to chall
GSP didn't challenge any of those guys. BJ called him out and decided to move up to fight him and the UFC gifted him the title shot. Serra won TUF as a WW and was guaranteed a shot by the UFC not GSP. And the second time they fought, Serra was the champion at WW. There's a big difference between what Silva's doing and what GSP has done.

so it only matters when there is a challenge? Those guys are/were LWs and much smaller than GSP.......but he was happy to fight them.
Silva has said he would be fine with a catchweight or moving down to 170.........so what is the problem with you guys?
everyone likes to point out how wrestling is Silva's biggest weakness so why is fighting the best wrestler in mma a "chump" move?

The terrible leap in your logic is obvious here. BJ and Serra challenged GSP, and challenged themselves outside of their own division. If GSP were to challenge Silva, then the situations would be similar, however, Silva is challenging someone lighter than him, and not only that, but he is challenging him to a a fight outside of GSPs weight class. It's a chump move.
