N.Y. Democrats throw MMA legislative roadblock
By Ken Pishna/MMAWeekly.com 2 hours, 33 minutes ago
UFC president Dana White has remained steadfast in his optimism in taking the Octagon to Madison Square Garden in New York sooner rather than later, but Democrats in the New York State Assembly have dealt a low blow to his hopes.
New York governor David Paterson has been a proponent of legalizing mixed martial arts in his state, and sanctioning has steadily made its way through the proper channels, but “Assembly Democrats stripped approval of [MMA] from a budget bill,” according to the New York Daily News.
UFC officials had been holding out hopes of holding an event in New York as soon as later this year, but removing MMA from the budget is a definite roadblock to supporters’ efforts.
“The majority of voices who spoke about this issue in our conference were not supportive of approving it as part of the budget,” Assemblyman Steven Englebright (D-L.I.), a fight fan, told Daily News reporter Kenneth Lovett.
UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner told MMAWeekly.com, “We’re monitoring Albany as I write this; we’re disappointed, but still working with the Assembly. To put it soccer terms we’re in three minutes of extra time and down two goals, but we’re still fighting.”
Now the question is if the UFC can shift gears from “MMA Juggernaut” to “Comeback Kid” on a moment’s notice.

At least it is only a budget issue as of right now and not the "brutal sport" arguement.

Just my thoughts, Brown. I'll take it more as the natural inconvenience of politics.
I'm from NY and I just don't get why we weren't on it sooner though.

So passing a bill that creates millions in revenue for citizens is a passed by as budget issue? By democrats of all parties? I didn't know dems could even talk about the budget without blushing. How hard is it to just pass a bill? I swear to god politicians make their job seem more difficult and time consuming that it is.

MA got it done pretty smoothly by expanding their boxing commission to an 'athletic commission' this year. new york is currently being run like s---, so its no surprise that this isnt going well either.

The title is kinda misleading, mainly b/c the Democratic Governor was the once who was trying to push the bill through to get extra tax dollars. From what I've seen:
22 Democrats and 10 Republicans supported the bill,
20 Republicans and 9 Democrats opposed the bill.
""Gov. David Paterson included the legalization of ultimate fighting in his executive budget proposal.
In the Senate, Republican Bill Larkin was one of the most outspoken opponents of the bill: “I can’t believe that we’ve wasted an hour of valuable time this afternoon,” he said, pointing out that the state budget is 10 weeks late.""
But, I don't think it is a partisan issue. I think it is a boxing fan/supporter and overprotectives v. those who want the tax dollars. I would think they would want the tax dollars. As soon as Illinois found out they could make money off MMA, they got regulations in place.

why any politician would block legislation that would bring and jobs and tax revenues to their state in this kind of economy is beyond me. UFC is a proven money maker. this a stupid a$$ move for a state that's broke. I guess MMA most offend their delicate sensibilities. get with the f'ing program NY.

What politician (Dem or Rep) actually gives a F**K about the economy or creating jobs? As long as the specific special intrest group that got each politician elected is happy, the politician is happy. NOTHING is being done to end the compitition of American labor & third world slave labor. NOTHING is being done to get ILLEGAL slave labor off our streets..... oh wait, Osamabama is filling a law suit against Az. for passing legislation that gives them the power to do the job he refuses to do. If you ignore the words flying out of their mouths & focus on the ACTIONS that they've actually taken, it's easy to say that incompetance is the best that can be said for them & treason is not out of the question.
Sorry for going off topic but, you must be very young if you still believe either party cares about anything other than "Buisness as usual".
