Too bad that it wasn't televised and also too bad it was against the Pirates (since they're terrible), but the guy was unreal last night. Struck out 8 of the last 9 batters he faced, including the side in the 6th and 7th. I don't think that I've ever heard of a pitcher have a 90 mph changeup. Ridiculous stuff...

14 k's in his first game, only 2 others have had more since 1920... and i don't think either of those were first overall picks where the whole baseball world was watching.
the only thing that's concerning is he relies on 100mph pitches and there's been so many pitchers who burn their arm out. Kerry Wood and Rich Harden are 2 that started great but fizzled.

I heard about this on my local radio show that I listen to. Hell of a first start. I think he was close to breaking the record for the most strike outs in a game. Does anyone why he was pulled? Did his pitch count get high? You would have to figure with all those K's his pitch count would have been in good shape. The Tigers had Scherzer pitch a few games back and I think he got up to like 13-15 k's before Leyland pulled him.

If I remember correctly the pitch count was around 95
and he was probably pulled to give the guy some rest and not screw up his arm

The Nats have him on a pitch count. I think that he only got to 94 pitches over 7 innings and they've stated that he's going to be closely monitored. Jak brought up a point below. Guys like Mark Prior and Kerry Wood got wrecked because they were throwing a ton of pitches early on. I hope that his arm holds up. He was close to breaking the record for most K's by a pitcher in his first game (15, by 2 pitchers). The record for a 9 inning game is 20.

Thanks. I'm surprised they even let him get to 95. Yeah they definitely do not want to over work this kid. Washington finally has something baseball related to cheer about

I'm pretty sure the record for strike outs in a game is like 22, which kerry wood has. If they pulled him in the 7th, with 14, he wouldn't have been able to get the record. Regardless impressive stuff from a KID with a ton of pressure to perform. He was hitting 98-99 in the 6th inning.
Hopefully he doesn't fizzle out like Jak said with that rocket arm. But Roger Clemens managed to do alright granted with steroids.
With that said, I'm a diehard Phillies fan and if Strasburg, and that kid they drafted a few days ago pan out, looks like our division will get a little tougher.

I was totally going to bring up Clemens. Steroids are a hell of a drug... :lol:
But Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson had long term success. Johnson was just a freak of nature and Ryan seemed like one of those guys who had properly trained all his life...

Don't you guys have Moyer? that's still gotta be one of the best stories in baseball. I don't think he can even throw 85+ and has still had a better last 10 years than most guys have careers.

yeah here in Detroit we have a similar situation with Joel Zumaya. The guy can throw 103mph but just can never seem to stay healthy. This year he has been good so we are holding are breath that nothing happens to him. I think one year he missed games because he had blisters on his pitching hand from playing to much rock band.

ez, the record is 20. Clemens did it twice, Wood once, and Randy Johnson once. Tom Cheney had 21 in a 16-inning game.

i think Nolan Ryan was also a "f--- it I'll pitch through it" type of guy. He had a TON of complete games. Guys used to throw 15-20 complete games a year. Now it's usually Halladay leads the league with around 10.
And yes, we have, and still love Moyer. His last win was his 100th win after turning 40. He's also the only pitcher not named Halladay on our team with a complete game, can't say I saw that coming. His last one he did it in 2 hours and stayed under 100 pitches. Eventually he's going to just fall off and be useless, hopefully he finishes out his contract this year and retires and comes back to coach our younger guys.
The Clemens point really is insane. When you do the comparisons to most guys that are just fastball pitchers they tend to fade and learn how to use more finesse, or just still try and muscle it and gettig lit up. But Clemens goes 20 some years throwing in the 90's til he retires. If he wouldve had run support that one year in Houston he wouldve had like 25 wins haha didn't he finish with an era around 2 even? Steroids are the s--- :lol:

I watched it on MLB Network, it was great. Pirates are middle of the road in K's against so it wasnt like he was striking out the worst K team in baseball.
Also, the record for first start K's is 15 and I'm pretty sure he could have gotten it if theyd let him go out another inning, but still amazing to watch. The movement on his curves and breakers is insane.
