WAR

I've come to learn that there is a big difference between people who work in fields that deal in reality (soldier in active combat, that's a very reality based field), and those that deal in theory.

Put it this way... you can't fake being a master carpenter. If someone is a master carpenter and has the resume of actively working as one for decades, I will defer to them all the time on carpentry based questions. A master carpenter either know how to install crown molding properly, or they don't. You're not going to be able to build a 20+ long year career talking your way out of completely fucking up custom cabinetry jobs by telling the client some buzzwords.

You can, to some extent, fake being a master economist. It's a very theoretical field and even people who are wrong most of the time can be considered experts. If you completely fuck up an economic forecast you can generally point to some aspect as being 'larger than anticipated' and people will shrug their shoulders rather than take you to task the way they would if you fucked up their crown molding.
I just so happen to be a master carpenter. Well above a foreman level. You draw me a picture, I will figure out how to build it, then build it. Just me. No YouTube videos, no google, no tutorials of any kind. It's all in my head.

I think the real deterrent is they're afraid because he's unhinged (don't tell him I said that).
You're actually not wrong I think.

One of my coworkers has been having issues with a former employee of her husbands landscaping business harassing them, and a couple weeks ago very carefully tried approaching me to see if I'd "handle" it for her.

I've started to wonder if they just keep me around for active shooter insurance...

What's in his head:

Yup, you can't (consistently) bullshit you way out of tasks that involve you working on things that exist in the physical world.

My buddy Mike is a diesel mechanic for a large forestry company in our area.

If I have any kind engine trouble (car, lawnmower, diesel truck, woodchipper... literally anything with an engine) I call Mike and run it by him to get his .02

Doesn't matter that he doesn't work on cars on an everyday basis, dude understands engines. Engine is an engine. He understands how engines work at a fundamental level, and because of that he understands how they break and the process to go thru to determine that happened and how to fix it.

My buddy Josh on the other hand? He works for Northwestern Mutual as a financial advisor... he's... dumb (professionally... socially he's a very pleasant and nice dude, we get along fine). Dude literally just types keystrokes into his companies model and regurgitates the information to his clients... he doesn't even understand half the shit he is saying because I have a degree in financial planning, I manage my own investments and I understand them way more at a fundamental level than he does (because I don't work off a model that a company built for me). I've given up on even trying to have professional discussions with him because he'll just kind of laugh and change the subject because it's clear he doesn't understand what he is selling. Nice guy though, and I'm sure his clients do fine... it's because he's trusting the model to do the work for him though. He's a complete fraud professionally.

That's not to say that all people who work in theory/feels based fields are dummies. My buddy Nate is an agricultural forecaster for commodities traders. He's a very smart dude and he can explain the models he works with that predict future prices inside and out and I'll just sit there with my jaw open like, "huh? I followed 3 out of every 5 words you said"... but, even though he's really smart... he's also wrong a decent amount of the time because commodity prices aren't like engines... they aren't a physical thing that sits there that you can work on as they remain in place. There's millions of different things that can impact future prices and some of them are impossible to predict (like criminal activity or catastrophic natural disaster). I find it interesting when I ask him what the price of soybeans will be and he gives me his prediction... but even he will say, "don't bet your mortgage on it though.. there's only so much I can know for certain".

Things are escalating quickly? but lame way to get back to fighting (I'm still guessing each side will stop here)

Iran: 'We attacked US Navy ships in response to ceasefire violation'

The Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters, Iran's emergency command center, said that "Iranian forces responded (to the ceasefire violation, according to their claim) by attacking US Navy ships - and caused them heavy casualties." It was also reported that "civilian areas on the coasts of Bandar Khamir, Sirik and Qeshm Island were hit by American airstrikes in cooperation with several countries in the region."

You know, after 250 years you think the world would have figured out the obvious:

In America we are damn near autistic about our boats. Go look at the history of our conflicts, and I'm pretty sure you will find that the majority were caused by someone touching one of our boats.

We had to pay a special fee just to archive your posts

If my words can reach just one person... and make them even 5% as hypervigilant and neurotic as me, it was all worth it!
