UK Discussion for UK People Only

It's not police overreach to arrest someone for a Facebook post? Locking people up for "upsetting people" is authoritarian and draconian.
Hmmm maybe it is, I think he should definitely have been sacked, it was pretty sick

Arresting people for upsetting other people is a wildly slippery slope. Where is the line? Who decides what righteous indignation is and what isn't? I much prefer the standard that the only criminal speech is speech that is directly intended to cause violence, such as in terrorism conspiracy. But if you let a government rando decide what speech is arrestable, you may be unhappy with how that turns out in the long run.

Maybe its a cultural difference or one of those you had to be there but the general feeling over here isn't uproar

And that's why I'm glad we have separate countries. I'm happy you're happy there, but I would never live in a country where I could be arrested for upsetting people with words. We would consider that tyranny over here

I always feel like you guys are more interested in the stuff reported about this country than I am
Because they want to be angry about just anything regardless of source reliability. You know the deal.
Sheesh. This thread never grows up. The rubbish discussed here doesn't define UK daily life and most of it is wildly overstated. Most of it belongs in the 'I submit to political algorithms' thead. Discuss.

No one is angry, this stuff is interesting because the UK is the closest country to the US, and what can happen there can very easily happen here. Our countries are like brothers who moved far apart but will always share a common heritage.

There is a clear trend of changing politics and practices in the UK. That's obvious from the news. I've been reading international news daily and thoroughly for almost 30 years now, so I'm no stranger to UK politics. There's some troubling signs of change over there and for us to be interested as a close relative is far from absurd.

What is absurd is your attitude towards people having a conversation. You don't like it and you want to throw tantrums and try to control others behavior. When instead you should be having the conversation you want. Bring up the good things you think should be spotlighted. Explain how what we're seeing is wrong.

Or just keep throwing childish fits. Your choice.

Another thing to consider is the source for your news. You almost always post from very left leaning sites that wouldn't write articles about the stuff you are getting your knickers in a twist about. I make a serious effort to read news from all angles. I read conservative news and I read liberal news. When you combine that with independent journalism you get a pretty good picture of what's happening. You should consider that The Guardian is so biased that they are basically a tabloid at this point.
