Politics

It's election day. I consider it a point of personal pride that I have curated my life in such a manner that the result will not affect me in any way whatsoever.
noice!

I have a potential job that hinges on this wealth tax. if it passes, he won't build and will leave CA.

It will affect you... just not in ways that you will acknowledge or care about in the short term.

I'm more or less in the same boat. I mean there's people at the local level that I prefer be elected over others because their values and approach towards zoning/growth align more with mine... and there's school board types that I would prefer be ousted because I don't some of their policies... but, end of the day if the bottom does fall out I'm in a position to where I can uproot without much pain and go somewhere that doesn't suck.

Brick's position is how I lived my life pretty much until recently (and I'm old). I used to truly believe that election results couldn't affect my life in any possible way because I insulated myself from that nonsense.

I guess I still do, but for different reasons. I now fully understand that we are all super fucked regardless of the results. We're at an unprecedented time in humanity. I've literally turned into a prepper. We're in some serious trouble unless adults step in. Unfortunately, there are no adults to vote for.

I'm fully on board with the mindset of, "Regardless of if the election coin lands on heads or tails this cycle, I'm not going to let it impact how I approach my life".

I cringe at the, "because I've made such amazing decisions and insulated myself from it all" (implying that others who are struggling have brought it all upon themselves)

All I'll say is... I hope you or your wife don't get a sudden, completely out of nowhere, long-term illness (MS in my case, cancer in the case of many family members and friends of mine) like my wife did and have to go through the hellscape that is the modern US healthcare and disability benefits system. It's not even the money part, it's the fucking hoop after hoop after hoop that you have to jump thru while signing check after check and watching tens of thousands of dollars be lit on fire. The entire system is an unmitigated disaster that I wouldn't wish on most of my enemies.

I also hope that your elected officials don't decide that your home or, more likely, all the homes on your block are standing in the way of 'progress' and decide to declare eminent domain. Family friend of mine (my dads best friend) who shared similar, "I've done everything right, do your worst government!" attitude went thru that about 6 years ago.

And again, if you want to say "well he got a nice check out of it so I don't see what the problem is?".... yes, he did get a nice (north of a million dollars) payment. The point is that despite all the meticulous curating of great decisions he made, and despite having the resources to hire lawyers and fight the government... he lost the fight and had to take the consolation prize of money for the land his family had lived on for generations.

I could post another page of ways the government/elected officials could buttfuck you and you'd be powerless to do anything about it and it wouldn't have anything to do with decisions you made or decided not to make, but whatever... I really don't care anymore and I know you don't either because "the odds are in your favor". You do you, I'll do me. I hope the odds continue to stay in your favor amigo.

I'm done biting.

I actually got a promotion at work yesterday, so I should probably get back to that part of my life.

congratulations

Thanks!

They basically just gave me the title for the role that I've already been doing for the last year, along with a 12% pay bump to go with it.

We did publicly announce a major acquisition about a month and a half ago though and I was bitching to our SVP and CFO about how much more work that was going to be for me (next year, after the deal officially closes) after peaking under the parts of the hood the company we're acquiring would let me look at and seeing what a rats nest disaster it was.

I made it clear that I don't care what my title is, but, if my pay stayed the same and my workload increased by 20-40% that they shouldn't expect me to be there through the fiscal year and see my part of the process completed from start to finish.

Apparently they heard my bitching and pushed the pay bump thru, my boss said the system is only set up for that level of pay if the title changed (I was maxed out salary wise under my former role). Good stuff. Of course I would have preferred 20% as that would have brought me in line with some of the offers I've received from competitors... though, those have all either come with managerial duties (yuck) or hybrid/100% in office requirements along with the costs associated with the travel to/from.

All in all, I'm more or less back to making what the role I'm in should pay given the autonomy/perks that I have (4 weeks vacation, boss who never checks up on me, no direct reports to have to manage, 100% remote work from home with the ability to relocate anywhere in the country I want without losing pay for doing it, etc).

Ok. I'll let everyone get back to politics now.

I agree with this 100% and I'm a bit embarrassed that it was me for 30 years. I used to be a "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" guy. I'm not anymore. I was a fucking felon at 22 years old. Life over. But I found a way to make a life. I'm comfortable now. I used to say it was all from hard work and never giving up. Now, I can look back and say I got super fucking lucky. I have childhood friends struggling to feed their families. That is directly related to political decisions and elections. I don't enjoy these conversations cause I'm checked out. I truly believe that we are all fucked and there is going to be a total breakdown in my lifetime.

You think this blue wave is something?

Well, I'm feeling a burbling in my guts and am about to unleash a brown wave. And the only breakdown will either be of the low-flow toilet, or the poor janitor tasked with keeping the bathroom habitable.
