To some fighters, age is just a number.
Just ask UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, who at 37 years old, is still going strong with a 15-0 record inside the Octagon since making his debut with the promotion in 2006.
Of course, as fighters get up there in age, they repeatedly get questioned about when they'll finally hang the gloves up for good and that was no different for "The Spider" in a recent interview with Brazilian newspaper Estadao. His answer (translated) may surprise you:
"I guess you can see more like six years of fighting. I love what I do. The team that works with me does a fantastic job. I've never had a serious injury that took myself away from competition. So I think I have this a little while longer."
Silva recently refuted retirement rumors at the press conference before his last bout, a second round TKO over rival Chael Sonnen, but this isn't the first time the topic has been breached.
It wasn't too long ago that Silva's manager, Ed Soares, mentioned that "The Spider" would only be fighting four more times in his career before retiring. Granted, that may have been some backroom political posturing to avoid rematches, but it's still out there.
Silva has been heavily rumored to be fighting UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre in a "dream fight" although GSP poured some cold water on the possibility earlier today.
With potentially six more years of fighting, there's no reason to rush top prospects like Chris Weidman into the title picture just yet, although Silva didn't mention that he would be fighting mixed martial arts for all six years.
Silva has long discussed wanting to have a boxing match against his idol Roy Jones Jr. when his MMA career is over, so that's something to consider as well.
With the Brazilian's tendency to fight only once or twice a year the past few years, I'd estimate he could squeeze in about 10 fights in a six year timespan.
Do you honestly see Silva fighting into his mid-40s? Who do you think he'll end up fighting next once his little vacation is over in 2013?

Didn't he also say he wanted to quit mma in his later 30's for a boxing career? 6 more years could happen, but he won't remain at a high level. The speed is eventually going to diminish and most likely pretty fast.

To be honest he should retire when he loses, sure it'd be a shame if he retires on a loss but if he would for example retire now and give up his title, people would say oh yeah but he would be able to defend it 10 more times, and others would say he quit at the right time etc. He just needs to set the title defense record as high as he can and then when he loses the title he should quit. Or possibly try an(other) superfight after he loses the title with GSP or JJ but that may lose a lot of hype when he loses his belt.

I think he's just messing with our heads.
He goes back and forth on this topic quite a bit.
One moment he doesn't have many fights left in him, the next he wants to pull a Randy Couture

You seriously think fighting Weidman does anything to "cement his legacy"??
If that fight happens, and if Silva wins, all we'll here is about how it was too early for Weidman. I really like Weidman, but he's got less career wins than SIlva has UFC KO's, lets not act like he's going to be the biggest name Silva has faced.

Thats the problem, they always throw Champs "Names" and not The Second Best Guy.... Look at all GSP's and Anderson previous Opponets and tell me where they rank in their Division.... s--- IS RIDICULOUS.

Just a thought here, but maybe Weidman should actually face a striker before we label him so highly.
The thought that losing Weidman would do anything to Silvas legacy is laughable IMO. Silva has regularly beaten the best MWs there are. Great fighters with their own good legacies like Henderson & Franklin are far more impressive wins for Silva than a Weidman win would be.

If Anderson Silva fights and beats GSP and Jon Jones there would be no doubt in anyones mind that he is the baddest fighter ever on the Planet....

Anderson was 37 two years ago? Not only GOAT and P4P, but he can stop time, too.
Silva for President! Of everything!!!

He could fight for 6 more cause he has taken virtually no damage in like 7 years. Now that I think about I don't ever remember a fight in his whole career where he took a lot of damage except the first Chael fight. He is one of the greatest mmaists of all time and he could be competetive for a long time but I doubt he will.
Is it me or does he seem to flip flop quite a bit?

Even the first Chael fight, Anderson didn't take a ton of damage.
And it isn't you. Seems like Anderson has a different answer for this question, each time he is asked.

I was just watching UFC 112 again and Joe Rogan mentions Silva wanting to go up to heavyweight. I'd love to see Silva stick around for another 6 years, but lets see what happens.
