ARE JON JONES AND PHIL DAVIS TOO "UNCLE TOM" FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY?
As a longtime MMA fan and being African-American as well, I have yet to see our people clamor over a black MMA fighter. It's quite odd that guys such as Jon Jones and Phil Davis, who possess dynamic skills, aren't popular among our race. But when you break it down, it's simple: Listen to their interviews. They sound whiter than a lot of white MMA fighters. Speaking proper should not be held against you, but ethnic groups like to relate to the person they're cheering for. Look at their dress. Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Michael Vick don't dress in TapoutT shirts and tight jeans. Nor do their entourages include a bunch of white guys. Before they are appreciated or even draw black fans toward them, they definitely will need an image conversion to a "hip hop" style, or they will be of little interest to us.

So you're saying black people only like hip hop culture? Maybe instead of stopping thieves, Jones should rape a woman (Kobe reference, not a stereotype for African Americans), or maybe get arrested for a gun-related offense?

I find people are stupid. it's why i have
ignorance
tattooed on me. This persons submission is just that.
What i also find stupid and weak, is people who can't express their views on a subject like this without getting overly worked up, as the dumbass who keeps going at -P on the main page is trying to do.
I have much more faith in forum posters that they can have a normal conversation about how dumb the submission is, and not attempt to cry anytime someone isn't as offended as another person is.
Racism is alive and well, and i'm glad Junkie didn't avoid including it. Avoiding racism and dumb people doesn't make them just go away.

I'd like to call BS on him being black. It's not like Obama wasn't "hood" enough to nab all those black votes.
So that little racist twerp was from Kentucky, this kid told me a few years back they have KKK parades over there...no surprise.

It was a stupid and offensive junkie entry. There is no way to verify its authenticity. Best to move on imo.

Easy there with the Kentucky hate. While yes, there is still pockets of inbred rednecks in the backwoods of the state, it is no worse than you will find in other parts of the country. Indiana has the largest amount of Klan rallies each year, and Wyoming, Idaho, and the Dakotas have often been in the news as having compounds for white suprimacist groups.
Now that I have defended my state a little bit, to the OP. I dont think that it is really an image problem with the African-American fighters. I think its just that the sport is still new and hasnt become as popular as basketball and football. Kimbo, Rampage, even King Mo have "hip hop" personnas but I dont think that has made much of a difference in the appeal of the sport to african american fans

Hello Ladies and Gentleman,
I cannot agree more that the UFC and the recent post in the Sunday Junkie is a great comparison to "Uncle Tom's Cabin, Life Among the Lowly" (the actual complete title of the book penned by Harriet Beecher Stowe) and here are my arguments:
1-The Setting of the book first takes place in the American South (Kentucky and Louisiana) and this posting also is written from Kody who beckons from Kentucky.
2- Eliza and George (main characters) escape route and travels leads them through Ohio which is the exact location that Rampage Jackson (African-American) fought Keith Jardine (hails from Montana which was an unaffiliated territory at the beginning of the American Civil War) at UFC 96.
3- Afterwards Eliza and George (main characters) travel into Canada where the latest UFC (129) was held last night.
Hope this assist in connecting the dots for some while assisting others develop a rational argument.
Most Respectfully,
Mr. Jerk

I think Jones and Davis are part of a new breed of African American. I think the AA community as a whole is getting away from that thug lifestyle. These days its acceptable for an AA to act with intellegence and maturity and its the ignorant ones who call them an uncles tom for doing so. Im living in Norfolk Virginia and down here we have a ton of military families. Most AA i know who are from a military family speak and act with intellegence and class because they have good rolemodels and were raised right. This may sound cheesy but i think its true...Obama showed the AA community that if you act right and work hard you can accomplish anything.

What psycho said.
Also, Uncle Tom should be looked at as a compliment. He protected a young slave woman from being raped by Quibbo and Sambo ( dont quote me on the names because its been a while since i read the book ) who were slaves and in charge of other slaves whom they beat and raped. The term Uncle was bestowed upon those men that were respected umongst the slaves. Tom also offered up his back to be lashed in order for that same slave womans freedom.

A "new breed"?
The amount of gross generalizations in your post and the post in the Sunday Junkie are absurd.
Plus, Rashad and Rampage, both black people as far as I can tell, were already UFC Light Heavyweight Champions. And Anderson Silva is a UFC Middleweight Champion. What makes them different than Jon Jones and Phil Davis?

I was both surprised and dismayed at that entry on the Sunday Junkie. To equate speaking clearly to being white is nothing short of racist, ignorant, and flat out stupid. Furthermore, using a term like "uncle tom" to describe a black man who is intelligent is outrageous.
