After decades of comic-book-based sagas led by men, Warner Bros. and DC will release Hollywood’s highest-profile female superhero extravaganza (no offense,
Catwoman

Elektra
) when
Wonder Woman
flies into theaters on June 2. Already the most anticipated movie of the summer (
according to Fandango
), the Gal Gadot-headlined origin story is looking like one of the season’s biggest hits — and to celebrate, the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin is going to hold two special screenings of the film for ladies only.
On June 6 at both 7 p.m. and — newly announced! — 6:30 p.m., the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin will celebrate the big-budget spectacular in no-dudes-allowed fashion. As it says on its

“Apologies, gentlemen, but we’re embracing our girl power and saying ‘No Guys Allowed’ for one special night at the Alamo Ritz. And when we say ‘Women (and People Who Identify As Women) Only,’ we mean it. Everyone working at this screening — venue staff, projectionist, and culinary team — will be female.”
Sounds like a blast to us, although perhaps predictably, some male online commenters have already responded to this announcement with absurd outrage at such a “sexist” plan, leaving lots of furious messages on the Alamo’s
Facebook page
(the best of which have been compiled by
Jason Bailey over at Flavorwire
). Its
Twitter page
is also full of snarky male chauvinists crying foul, which the Alamo has spent the better part of the day responding to.

What it does is give people reason to go see it at Drafthouse rather than Regal or Santikos, the latter of which has been catching up with Drafthouse in terms of food and beverage offerings. Its Austin, the people who are going to whine about it probably weren't traveling there anyway.
As for it being illegal? Probably not, so long as they can show a legitimate business interest; further show that the gender discrimination involved is limited to serving that legitimate business interest, and that those "harmed" by it have considerable alternatives to redress that harm. It's why it's legal for Hooters to not hire male waitstaff.
1. It serves a legitimate business interest (in that Hooters "hot waitresses" are a marketing point of the establishment).
2. It's limited to serving the interest (men can and are hired for other positions).
3. Men have many other alternatives to be waitstaff (non-breatraunts).
2 showings a widely released movie doesn't seem to be all that difficult to sell the legality of. Frankly they covered a bigger potential issue by including "those who identify as women" in their rules. And yes, if they wanted to do a "guys only" showing of Porky's or whatever, it's likely just as legal.

To clarify - if I'm in Austin and I want to see this movie (and I do) and the others theaters were too far away or sold out, I'd try to buy a ticket and get in. And if I were denied, I'd be a little miffed.
Not that I mind the premise. I actually think a "woman's night" is a great idea. But tell other people they can't go, seems like its pushing it.
I'm certain you can't deny entry to anyone based on gender. Just like you can't say "this showing is only for White people".

The key is to show a legitimate business purpose. Hooters won their lawsuit over guys who sued on gender discrimination grounds.
That said it's not cut and dried. Some states have found that ladies nights at bars (reduced pricing) violates non-discrimination laws. Others have found they don't.
In this case, it's unlikely you wouldn't be able to find another theater showing the film in the same general area.

I personally do not know of anything else around here other than one spot in Georgetown that serves food, beer, and snacks on real plates on tables in front of your seats. Either way this whole scenario only matters if you were planning on eating during your movie.
I feel like this is just them showing support for uber femmies...idk. Doesn't bother me a bit just think it's funny.

I'd actually be curious to see the turnout for that. Even though Wonder Woman is a female lead character, it still seems very much like a 'guy' movie. For instance, someone like my wife would have no interest in watching this. And usually when she does go to the movies, she wants me to go. If her and her female friends get together for a movie, it sure as hell ain't gonna be a super hero flick. So I'm actually curious to see how it draws. Now that it has been made an issue, probably better than it would have.
