"
Remember the post I did why you have to open your hips when you kick? Otherwise you connect with the flat part and break your shin." - Bas Rutten via Facebook.

I love Bas but I don't think Anderson gives a f--- about I told you so's right now. I'm sure there is a way to reiterate his point or the technique with I told you so.

Anderson Silva would wreck a prime Rutten.
And Rutten sure did a good job of avoiding injuries in his playing days.
Next Lesnar is going to tell Mark Hunt how to effectively take a punch/kick.

"Silva would wreck a prime Rutten?" Seriously? I love Silva like the next man but there ain't many stand up type fighters that could do much to Bas. Dude was a wrecking ball as well in the stand up.
Good fight it would've been though.

Well that clip is not directed at Anderson at all as it's a year old.

The game has evolved leaps and bounds since Bas' days.
The Brazilians said the same thing about Royce Gracie's JJ. Then Hughes beat the piss out of him.

I don't see any malice in Bas's comments. He just had a prime example on what could happen if you throw a leg kick incorrectly. The OP's thread title makes it seem like Bas was rubbing it in Silva's face.
Damn, I've trained in Krav Maga and three "use of force" courses and none of my instructors ever told me that.

Well, no one instructor knows everything. I have been training striking for years, and I never knew about this. But I throw a different type of "leg kick", so I never had to worry about this happening to me

Hmmm, no question the athelete and nutrition/sports science has evolved but you can only Assume who you think may win in a fight that hasn't happened. So using your' logic Ali, who is considered one of the Greatest of all time would be destroyed by today's HWs? Some guys just transcend " the times" and would be competitive in any Era. That goes in many athletic categories

Thing is, Royce was so one dimensional that it was only a matter of time before a wrestler did that to him. Hughes got to a level where there wasn't much hope of him being caught(Royce versed in one discipline and Hughes versed in two). Standups different, both Bas and Ando already had the skills on the feet. Bas was a worldclass kickboxer with many pro bouts. You said you were sure that Silva would wreck him in his prime. Well I'm just questioning it that's all as it would've been a damn competitive stand up type fight with 2 fighters that have high dan Blackbelts in Taekwondo and other disciplines.

I've seen vids of kick boxing and MMA fights where there was a shin break form a kick. never knew why. did it have something to do with the fighters health? technique?
here Bas explains it from a technique perspective. I'd like to see how coaches and fighters who practive a certain striking style that has fighters kick using the flat part of the shin counter this.
and I don't think this is Bas going haha told you so, more like see this is what can happen even to the greats Silva when you kick like that

Bas Rutten
Last one for real, haha, OK, thanks for posting the short video. Now I know Weidman checked it with his higher part shin (just under the knee), well, this was a freak accident, it was with the flatter part of the shin although he DID turn his hips in a bit.
When Weidman wouldn't have blocked, it would have been a good kick just above the knee and everything would have been fine. So this could have happened to anybody. Still, when a thinner flatter part hits a thicker (flatter part in this case) this can happen.
The video I posted is about blocking a right outside low kick with your left leg just under your knee.
I am on MMA junky radio tomorrow morning at 9 am PT with George Garcia. I give you more examples of some fighters who do this with their right leg (when orthodox) and I a huge fan of those guys. With the inside low kick it will almost always hit the flat part of the shin bec of the angle.
Party on

I'm pretty sure that video is old and was made in reference to a different breakage because Bas mentions "some guy" who broke his leg rather than Silva.

I didn't say anything about A. Silva in my first two posts on here. All that Hatorade came from the Huggers

Suppose for the sake of argument that Silva broke his shin because of some awesome blocking technique by Weidman. Suppose Weidman's technique is designed to use the strongest, sharpest part of the knee against the weakest part of Silva's leg. Suppose this technique becomes standard defensive technique in MMA/UFC. In this circumstance, would it then be proper to ban metal implants in the leg designed to strengthen them? Just putting this out for discussion.

definitely they need to wave the fighters down with a metal detector before each match!
