Big John McCarthy joins Bellator as color commentator
Bellator today announced “Big” John McCarthy is joining the Viacom-owned promotion as a color commentator for its 2018 event schedule, which kicks off with Bellator 192 on Jan. 20 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif.
McCarthy indicated he will step away from his principal role in the sport, though he did not explicitly say he would retire from referee duties. A request for comment and clarification went unanswered.

Makes sense, John is known to their target audience and comes with a ton of knowledge. Something that also stands out is that their crew now consists of no newer blood. John is fresh in terms of the booth, but he is working w/ guys that, while talented, are known to rely on the same patter and clichés event after event (not saying that folks outside of bellator don't have similar bad habits). I don't see John breaking them of those behaviors.
I should add it is a great move for him if he won't be returning to reffing MMA.

So, this means he will not be reffing, right? Wouldn't it be a conflict of interest (not saying Big John himself would ever do anything shady) or something of the like to have him working as a promotion's employee whilst being hired by various commissions to officiate? If so, it's a shame. He's one of the very best out there.

He has neck issues that would make it difficult to be as physical as MMA reffing requires. He has said that he will ref boxing.

BTW, in case people hadn't heard, Big John's decision is partially based on the fact that he was injured and had surgery somewhat recently. When this commentating gig came up all of a sudden, he had already been thinking about job security outside of the cage/reffing.
