UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn is famous for competing in much higher weight classes than his frame makes comfortable; he even won his first UFC title at welterweight. As Penn gets ready to defend his title against Frank Edgar at UFC 112, there have been rumblings of another move up in weight for Penn that would see him taking on contenders in hopes of recapturing the welterweight championship.
"Yeah, I think there is a possibility of that," Penn said in a recent interview with IGN Sports. "I don't in no way want to look past Frankie Edgar, he's a good fighter. You never know what could happen. But if I go back to welterweight, maybe I'll try to give it a run, maybe fight a couple of fights there, we'll see how it goes."
He went on to discuss his chances against the large 170lbs. like Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch.
"I think I could do good against some of the top welterweights," he said. "Yeah, pretty big guys, but you gotta live some times, you gotta step up sometime, huh?"
Penn also said that, depending on the outcome of the upcoming Matt Hughes Vs. Renzo Gracie fight, that he is open to a rubber match with Matt Hughes (Penn submitted Hughes to win the 170lbs title but lost in a rematch). Penn seems to be leaning away from bouncing around in weight; he told IGN that he "might try to do it permanent."
Before those of us who find a renewed Penn's prospects at welterweight intriguing get too excited though, we should note that Penn and his innovative trainers (Marv and Gary Marinovich) "haven't even talked about [moving up to welterweight]."
"The Prodigy" seems relaxed and in a groove right now in his career. Penn is very close to clearing out his division of worthy contenders. Depending on the results of his looming fight with Frankie Edgar, I don't think that many people would be surprised to see him move up and try his chances against the bigger dogs at welterweight.

How do you guys think this one plays out?

I'd love to see BJ move up permanently but if he does I hope he does it right and adds weight properly and takes his time. For me I don't think there is a fighter I like watching more than BJ.....as a GSP fan can't believe I'm saying that

With his new training system, I think he can do just that. But, honestly, he should stay right where he is.

I think BJ could KO Hughes if he can avoid getting slammed.

Yeah, but until BJ gassed, it wasn't even remotely close. An in-shape BJ wins by nasal rape.

I have a whole different take on this. I always am suspicious when top fighters are talking about fights with completely irrelevant guys who are no wheer near the top. What is going through BJs head that he actually wants to take a completely meaningless fight? Perhaps Hughes is the only WW he feels he has a great shot against in order to lay claim he deserves another shot at GSP, and if thats the case thats pretty sad and pathetic.

I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen due to the fact Hughes probably don't want to get murdered.

I would think that is exactly why he wants this fight. He can say I beat Hughes, see I can compete at WW, now let me fight GSP again. That is the only reason he would have any interest in this fight at all IMO. Maybe he wants to prove hes a better fighter than Hughes, but I doubt that. I think he just wants to try to get another fight with GSP.

If BJ must fight a WW, lets see him vs. Rumble. Guaranteed stand up fireworks. Rumble is a little overrated, but he's wildly entertaining.

Oh Im sure it is I just think its ridicilious. "Hey, I want to prove I should get another shot at GSP by fighting a guy GSP beat handily twice and is no longer a top 5 possibly not even top 10 WW wihin the UFC, oh yes, and I like the fact that hes long in the tooth and his skills have not come close to staying current with the fight game" Its just silly.

Really? I think he's cleaned out the division personally and I'd much rather see him fight Fitch, Kos, or Daley then Maynard or Tyson Griffen

I don't care what BJ Penn wants. I want BJ Penn to fight RELEVANT welterweights.
I would be pretty upset if we ended up with BJ Penn vs. Matt Hughes over BJ Penn vs. Koscheck/Daley/Thiago/Hardy

Yeah BJ's a much better fighter and Matt hasn't evolved and more importantly he's lost his drive
