It's no secret that Rich Franklin cannot hang with Anderson Silva. However, he is probably one of the fighters that has fell under the radar. After starting 22-1, he lost to Anderson twice, Henderson and Belfort. However, people tend to forget that he has defeated Okami and is continuing to defeat fighters. Although not looking quite impressive lately (controversial decision win over Wanderlei and his come from behind victory over Chuck) it is pretty certain that Franklin is still in the top 10 in the Light-Heavyweight divison and probably top 7 in the Middleweight. Although he has much better chance to win the title at Light-Heavyweight, many still believe he can hang with anyone in the division not named Anderson Silva. So what do you think?

If he could prevent Okami and Sonnen from taking him down he could punch them in the face a lot. Nate has better standup then them, and would be an exciting fight. I don't know for sure though. I think Okami and Chael both get him down and grind him out, but there's always a chance that Rich out points them standing.

Read the question mark SMARTIE. I forgot he moved up after the Wanderlei fight (Chuck fight totally flew over my head and same with the forrest fight :lol: ...Too stoned right now)
and he can obviously hang with Okami since hes beaten him already

I still think he'd have a decent shot against anyone at MW besides AS. He's very solid in every area.

If he wanted to, I think he could stay #2 in the division, much like Jon Fitch is for WW. He knows that he will never beat Silva though.
It seems that Franklin hasn't really been able to evolve recently though, so I doubt he can do it for much longer.

this.........at MW no one not name Anderson Silva, Vitor can beat Rich Franklin......He is a solid LHW you guys are acting like he looks like old dude, the guy has looked great recently.
What do you mean by evolve? his ground game is solid, his striking is solid.....I think people here mis use the word evolve, only because Anderson kicked his *** and Vitor did too standing?? two of the best strikers in all of MMA?
People were saying Brock had evolved after beating Carwin....really!!

i always wanted to see how he'd match up with marquardt. just seemed like it would be an entertaining fight. it's just that he'd never be able to take out anderson. but then again, i don't think he's ever gonna take the belt at 205 either.

I think Franklin has a chance to beat all of these fighters, now how good those chances are is a different story. I think the only fighter he would be favored against in the betting odd is Okami though.

By evolve I mean adapt in a way necessary for his survival. Which for him means get quicker and crisper striking. He is the same Rich Franklin he was 3 years ago.

It looks pretty good to me........thats not evolving mate....he has been an evolved fighter for a while already.
His wrestling is good, his submissions are good, his striking is solid.......he has been a complete evolved fighter 3 yearss ago. The guys he has lost to are just great
Only cause he got out striked by Vitor and Anderson doesnt mean he isnt evolving it means those two animals are the best strikers in MMA.......he seem to do well against the iceman and Wandy two of the greatest strikers in MMA history

I think Rich is already evolved, he has a ''complete'' skill set as far as I know. He is ok at everything, but no area really shines.
The thing is, he hasn't shown DRAMATIC improvement. Hes a gatekeeper, he can't handle Shogun or Anderson IMO. His job is to get rid of the old (chuck) and test the new (someone I can't recall) -_- . . .but thats jus me man leave me alone. . .
I believe he can be champion though, if he commits, theres always room for improvement IMO.

I think his next "evolution" needs to be his hand speed and overall striking game. He fits well into the mold of strikers that can hang on the ground, and avoid the ground if necessary. He needs to make his hands better and faster or he's gonna be doomed to be a gatekeeper.

Good Thread.
I think he can still beat alot of fighters in MW only Anderson & Vitor give him problems with speed and he already beat Okami that was 2-3 years ago.

Rich believes he can beat Anderson - he's just acutely aware of the fact that in the fan's mind they disagree with him and the fight wouldn't sell well.
I'm a big Franklin fan. I've just recently been watching his last fights and one of his main problems at MW, especially as he aged, was his speed. He just looked a step or two behind with his movement and hand speed - not a good way to be when your fighting guys like Anderson Silva. I very much look forward to what he can do at LHW. I think he will stop Forrest and then, hopefully, get up for a no.1 contenders bout.

That "Come from behind" win over Chuck was really, a 2 minute fight, with Rich trying to figure out wtf to do about his broken arm for the last 3 mins. It impressed the hell out of me when I realized why he looked different for the last half of the round.
Rich has a chance against any MW or LHW you put him in the octagon against. He won't be the favorite against all of them, but Rich is known to be a very cerebral fighter. Game Planning + a well rounded skill set = Able to hang.

IMO Rich is on his way out! I think he's got maybe 1 or 2 fights left in him. He was an awsome fighter back in the day...Thats before Anderson Silva got a hold of him.
