Tim Sylvia said this week he'd like to make a return to the UFC or perhaps fight in Strikeforce following his fight at the Moosin event on Friday. Can Big Tim compete with any of the top 15 or 20 fighters in the UFC and Strikeforce at this point in his career?
ALVIN CARTER III, MMATORCH SPECIALIST
I think Tim Sylvia could possibly compete with Arlovski again, and a couple of others if he gets his cardio up. I also think he could even step in there against Antonio Silva.
TOBEN SHELBY, MMATORCH AUDIO CO-HOST
I think Tim Sylvia is likely done as an elite level heavyweight, but I also believe that if he’s properly motivated he could be competitive with some UFC and Strikeforce heavyweights. The Ray Mercer fight was embarrassing and he shouldn’t have lost, but people get caught. Even past his prime as a boxer, Mercer has heavy hands. MMA fandom seems based upon ‘what have you done for me lately,’ so it’s not surprising to me that many people are down on Sylvia, especially considering that he wasn’t ever a fan favorite.
Does Sylvia belong at the top of the division? No, and I don’t think he’ll get close again – the game’s just evolved too much. But I think if he comes in shape he can be a good test for anyone. Honestly though, even if he goes on a big streak, I don’t think Sylvia returns to the UFC. Strikeforce is a more likely scenario, where they really need depth in the division.
LARAMEY LEET, MMATORCH CONTRIBUTOR
Tim Sylvia will not return to the UFC. He can beat and destroy all of the washed up freak show fighters that he wants to; he will not go back to the UFC. Before the end of the year I believe Sylvia will be in Strikeforce. I do not think that Sylvia can compete with any of the top ten heavyweights, but he might get lucky and pull a win over 11-20 fighter. He is not the same caliber fighter that he used to be or maybe the competition in the heavyweight division has jumped up tremendously; you decide.
SAM MATTHEW, MMATORCH COLUMNIST
Even with Tim Sylvia's recent win over newbie Marius Pudzianowski, he really wouldn't last long in the UFC's now stacked heavyweight division. Maybe Strikeforce's growing roster could provide some decent matchups for him, like rising heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, or test him against a couple of the other declining strikers in Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers.
what yall think?

Despite my dislike for Tim, if Tim takes it seriously, I believe he could still compete with the top 15-20 and even some of the top ten.
Yeah, I said it!

I agree to I feel he has the size to compete with the new breed of hw's and If he got motivated he could make a real impact

I may not like Timmy, but I am not going to lie because of it. Not only does he have the size, but also the talent and experience. Listen more than half of the top ten HW are rookies, like it or not. Furthermore, at least half appear up to this point to be rather one dimensional. Take Sylvia's last fight. What is Tim known for? Knocking people the f*ck out. Yet he did not punch nor tire himself out in round one of his last fight. Also he finished the fight on the ground...
Sleep on him all you like, Tim has a serious chance to take out some of these rookies AND seasoned vets.

I personally would like to see him fight in his weight class tho 1 time b4 getting picked up by SF. But i think he could really test some of the guys in their division and hell even in the UFC plus people love to watch tim just in hopes he loses thats not a bad thing 4 SF

I agre whole-heartedly. Another fight or two at HW would do him wonders and give him a bit of a winning streak, which would also work in his favor as well as that of Strikeforce imo.

Timmy could absolutely be competitive in Strikeforce. Strikeforce needs competitive fighters in every division. Seems like a match made in heaven to me.
And I
hate
watching Timmy fight.

Timmy knows how to win a fight.....its the ugliest thing in the f---ing world but somehow he wins. He has fought some of the best fighters ever....he has been in the cage with Fedor, Big Nog, Randy, Mir, Arlovski, Ricco Rodriguez and some other good fighters like Jeff Monson, Vera, Rothwell .....and has a 26-6 Record WTF!!!
I think he can compete with second level UFC HW's and SF second level HW's as well. UFC can put him as a gate keeper for Duffee, struve, Shaub for them to pick up a name. I wouldnt mind seeing CroCop kick his ***, it would be a nice win for Mirko.
He would be a great addition for SF he can compete with Kimbo or have Lashley or Del Rosario murder him so they can have a name to their list. Brett Rogers wouldnt be a bad match up either.

Can he compete? for sure, it's a small HW division so even without fighting he'd be top 8.
I think it would be foolish of SF to go that route, because while he may be a named fighter, that name is associate with poor fights and usually boring fights.

Regardless, people will pay to see him fight. Especially now that he's back in the Win column. Rematches with Fedor or Arlovski would be awful. I'd like to see him fight Antonio Silva.

I doubt it.. Sylvia is an okay fighter.. All of the SF HWs (all 6 of them
) have better skills and would beat Tim.

MMABLASTER - Tim Sylvia can compete in SF's heavyweight division if he gets back with a respectable camp and loses 30 pounds. He needs to be relatively injury free and able to get in good shape.

Remeber like a week or two ago when I said I have some sick little part of me that wants to see Silvya vs Rogers.
I think It may be closer to reality with his win over Pudz. I think with 1 more win(maybe in Japan or even another Adrenaline show) SF picks him up.

he needs to stop stuffing his face with twinkies and get in shape. His record speaks for itself, hes fought the whos who in the HW division. If he decided to take fighting seriously again, he could make a splash in the strikeforce Hw division

I really feel he could be good he has one of the best records at hw. I mean if he could get some more good wins he could be one of the all time greats as much it pains me to say it. I mean like the pudz fight he reallly had very little benefit to tim and was a risky fight for him but at least hel take almsot any match and seems to enjoy fighting. IF he can lose 30 pounds he could be back.

How is it that people have forgotten Timmeh had bad performances against Andre Arlovski,Jeff Monson, Randy Couture, Brandon Vera, Fedor Emelianenko and Ray Mercer.
He beats 1 guy with 2 MMA fights and no real experience, and he's suddenly going to return to the top.
