The only businesses that hire/purpose employees to retrieve carts are the ones that also have cart corrals in the parking lot (Wal-Mart, CostCo, large supermarkets, etc).

My rule is:
If I'm parked a quarter mile from the store entrance I'll use the cart corral (it's what it's there for) rather than push it all the way back into the store... bypassing corrals that employees are tasked to maintain.

If I'm closer to the store entrance than the nearest corral, or, if there are no corrals... I have the decency to push my cart back into the store. Stores without corrals aren't hiring people specifically to retrieve loose carts from the parking lot, and like E said, you're taking them away from their actual job and making the store a worse place for other shoppers.

We're talking about shopping carts again? Coming back from Miami I still don't get why people don't put them in the corrals. You don't see that here (or not often).

Anyway, funny story. As you know I'm borderline OCD. I went to Fresco y Mas (food chain in Miami) with my wife. She went in to buy things while I was waiting outside. And I saw all those carts... So I got out of the car and fetch about 15 of them to put them in the corrals. It was obvious I was not an employee because 1) I wasn't wearing the yellow/orange vest. 2) I'm white. People were looking at me REAL funny... LOL.

One of them even approached me to ask my name. I was proud to say my name is @Eranys (last part not true)

I already told this, but in Germany they learned, that Germans can not be trusted (..is there historical evidence?!)
so you have to put in a coin, which you get back, when bringing it back to the corrals (had to google that.. corral? really? xD)
Even with this engineering masterpiece some people that live closeby will just take the whole thing home and reuse it, when they go shopping again. But it's usually very rare xD

not here. there's 3 or 4 old folks homes within half a mile of the store. at any given time there's about 15 shopping carts ditched in the dirt in front of these places. Not only are Harold and Mabel not returning their carts to the corral, they're not even getting within 1/2 mile of the corral. It's gonna take Arnie a week to bring these back.
 
They tried the coin thing here a few years ago. Didn't work out well. People don't carry hard money and coins anymore. They changed the system for the one that locked the wheels as soon as you leave the premises. But that method wouldn't change a damn thing if you leave your cart anywhere near the stores.

But why not just take them back? If everyone abandons there will be anarchy and people won't be able to drive out of the car park

That makes sense because we only have one here that does that and it originated in Essen Germany. Aldi
