A
Champion's clause
is a stipulation in a fighters contract which states : a fighter is unable to change and compete for another organization if he is the current Title holder in his prospective division.
Jake Shields
, much to his agents credit imo, did not have a Champion's clause, this allowed Jake to vacate his Strikeforce Mw.Championship, then sign and compete immediately with the UFC.
Hector Lombard
, the Bellator FCs. current Mw. Champion has a Champion's clause. What this means for the fans is that we may be forced to watch the Wrecking Machine compete against sub-par opponents for some time to come. A big fish in a small pond if you will.
Alistair Overeem
, has competed with the likes of Strikeforce,Dream, and K1.It's common knowledge that fighters switch between Dream & Strikeforce on a regular occurence. Depending on whether he has one, (Champion's clause) could this prevent him from joining the UFC,and is it a sticking point?
Fedor Emelianenko
, perhaps this is the main sticking point in many of Fedor's contract negotiations.Failing to sign with the UFC, because of what was claimed as the desire to co-promote, which would have resulted in a match with Randy Couture(08) for his first fight, may be due in part to the UFC's Champion's clause. Strikeforce learned from the Jake Shields situation, and this could be the reason, untill recently, why Fedor fighting again was up in the air.

Re: CHAMPION'S clause -Thoughts on this sticky contract conc
If a company spends the money to build you in their organization you should have to honor it if you become the champ. As far as sf not having a clause with Jake.It had nothing to do with sf.They bought Jakes contract from elitexc.Elite was the one that didn't have the clause.I'm sure sf has learned from that and will make sure it is part of all contracts from now on.

Re: CHAMPION'S clause -Thoughts on this sticky contract conc
It's not sticky. If a fighter did not want it, they should not have negotiated it into their contracts.
It is also not sticky because the only person to try and fight this in court lost(though i dont recall their being an actual ruling but an understanding between couture and the ufc, but only because the expectation was couture was going to lose his bid to be released from his contract)
Jake Shields, Ovreem, and Fedor are the exact reasons the bigger organizations SHOULD insist on this clause in their contracts. Obviously anyone not the UFC doesnt have quite the same leverage, but Ovreem has ahd like 1 fight in SF in several years. Shields LEFT with the belt, and Fedor, if he had been the champion, fights less than Ovreem(who stays busy)
What would have happened to the legitemecy of the Strikeforce belt if Ovreem had somehow lost to duffee?
Considering the debate, what would have happened if couture was able to leave the UFC, go the Affliction and lost to Fedor? Why should any organization screw themsleves and possibly lob an assist to a competing organization.

A perfect example of why champion clauses are necessary is WEC's title history. Most of the champs never defended their titles and vacated it.

Inside MMA 504 - Gilbert Melendez
What's eating Gilbert Melendez? His contract situation for one. The Champions clause. He joins Kenny and Bas, and the panel of Cesar Gracie and Jorge Rivera to discuss that and possible future matchups.

Personally I would like to see no organization have a champions clause. But as soon as one organization has it then they all have to have it.

You gotta understand the reason for it though, buisness 1o1, they're just protecting their interests.
That would be fun though. With a comp. like the UFC their contracts are even more exclusive than simply the Champs clause for all their fighters.
I could see alot of belts being Hi-jacked No ?
