Former UFC light heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, appeared on ESPN’s ‘SportsNation’ on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview.
When asked how the sport has changed since his retirement in 2010, Liddell suggested that some of the UFC’s new champions have shown a tendency to ‘play it safe,’ in particular GSP:
“I think some people make complaints about some of the champions playing it safe,” said Liddell. “I understand it, but I don’t want to watch it. I think St. Pierre is a great fighter. He’s awesome… I just don’t like watching him play safe. And he fights safe. I mean against Diaz he spiral rode him for half the fight. I don’t like watching that.”
“Now, for him to be able to do that to guys that are at that level is impressive. But it’s not exciting to me. And the way they chose the fight. I mean ‘I’ve been beating this guy up for four rounds, I’m still just gonna win the last round. I’m not gonna try to finish him. I’m not gonna go after him. I’m not gonna take any risks.’ From a coaching standpoint and a manager’s standpoint, I understand. It makes sense. It’s big money now. But from a fan’s standpoint, I don’t want to watch it, [not] unless I think he’s fighting someone that can make him fight. I actually think this next fight coming up, I’m excited, he’s fighting Johny Hendricks and I think Hendricks is going to make him fight.”
St. Pierre is scheduled to defend his UFC welterweight title against #1 contender Johny Hendricks at next month’s UFC 167 event in Las Vegas.

I'm sure GSP isn't impressed with Chucks chin, or lack there of.

I have no problem with his take on GSP.
It changes nothing though, GSP is a great champion. It is his opponant's job to solve him, take the title.
I am a GSP fan, as well as a Chuck fan.
He was giving an opinion I don't think is controversial at all. It is actually the predominant critique.

Maybe Chuck wouldn't have got KO'd so much at the end of his career if he went for a takedown.

I generally agree with Chuck(which rarely happens). What GSP does is smart, he has a ton of fans as is, but for people like me, when I see him easily beating his opponent time after time and that's it, I'm left with wanting more. Not a knock on him or his camp, I respect teh guy, just an honest opinion.

I'm a GSP fan and I understand exactly where Chuck is coming from. It's going to take a loss for GSP to realize that giving 5 rounds to a guy to figure you out is eventually going to bite him in the ***. It almost happened against Condit. I mean look at Chris Weidman vs. Mark Munoz as a great example. He went in there and just went bat s--- crazy trying to finish Munoz with everything he had. He wasn't afraid of anything Munoz had. GSP did it against Serra in their second fight and there's no reason he can't be doing that every fight, he just respects his opponent's skills way too much so he gameplans everything (if he's good at the standup, he takes them down (Condit/Diaz/Alves), if they are good on the ground, he keeps it standing (Shields)). Don't get me wrong I'll still pay for every GSP fight because he's my favorite and a fellow Canadian, but it can be excruciating to watch that sometimes when you know he can do so much more. Needs to just respect his own skills and do whatever it takes to win.
Shame on anyone saying s--- about Chuck Liddell and how he chose to live through his fighting career. Yeat at the end he was getting KO'd but he's still one of the most successful/exciting/influential fighters in history.

I'm surprised they were able to make a legible transcript from Chuck's slurred mumbles.
Maybe he's not the best guy at this point to criticize someone who has twice as many title defenses and even in broken English is easier to understand than him " Playing it safe"

Chuck was one of the most exciting fighters in the sports history and is one of the reasons this sport is where it is today. He has all the rights in the world to criticise somebody's style. Most fans would agree with him
Your disrespect is horrible

Agree; I can't really fault GSP for fighting the way he does because winning is job #1, but it's obviously not a fan favorite style of fighting in general. I don't think Chuck said much here that most people don't agree with 100%. Well, rational people anyway.

How is it that Chuck has suffered lord knows how many concussions, and he can still speak better than Tito?

For real, the same people who would scream in agony to get a picture with him also is the funny part. At least Liddell left it all out there in the cage win or lose, champion or not. GSP will may be more dominant but won't have the memorable fights Liddell had.

Chuck was a better Champ than GSP, he gave the fans what they wanted to see! (A fight, not a chess match)

Yeah, Most MMA fans like to see a "real fight", where fighters leave it all in the cage and dont hold back. For my money Chuck was a better Champ, as far as Paying to watch him fight is concerned.
