i don't think too many people still consider Guida a "top fighter" in the LW division. People originally loved his fast pace and non stop fighting style but i think now more people are starting to realize that hes one dimensional.
is clay wants to "wear that strap one of these day" he better go "back to the old draw boarding" and start training in something other than wrestling.

exactly. He's got a great chin and heart, but you need more than just wrestling these days. You also need more that BJJ, just ask Nate Diaz. It's time for these youg fighters to evlove too.

Guida is not and fill not be a upper echelon fighter at 155 ever, to one dimesnsional and cant imagine anybody who would be a worse champion.
And like Rhino said everybody needs to grow their game today, especially Nate Diaz after what we say tonight. That is the second time in two fights that we have seen him smothered and overpowered by a superior wrestler. He either needs to train up his wrestling or even go up a weight. We have all seen his brother fight at 155-160 but he seems to do better at higher weights so you can olny assume Nate may want to give it a try to bulk up and put on some muscle because as we have seen just because you can make a weight and maxamize your size in a certain class doesmnt mean it is the best fight for you(ala Rich Franklin is a monster at 185 but seems to fight and feel better at 205) love him as a fighter and Both the diaz brothers in grneral and am sick of seeing him lose fights in that fashion.

i think he is a top fighter as top 10 at LW but Diego proved that he is next in line for bj.

I'll say this now: I really, really admire Clay's heart, determination, chin, and fighting spirit. He is an absolute warrior and is a tough fight for pretty much anyone at LW
Having said all that, no way is he a top LW. A good wrestler like Sherk, Frank Edgar or Gray Maynard would tool him, as would BJ Penn, Florian, and probably Tyson Griffin.

His standup isn't horrible at all. So losing to Diego Sanchez in a split decision means you're not a top LW?

I'd have to agree with most here. Where I enjoy watching Guida for the most part his ability seems to be lacking something. He has decent stand up. Not great but definitley not bad. Nice takedowns and control but thats kinda where it stops. He's relentless with his GnP but doesn't inflict a ton of damage. Just mainly wears guys out. Hes a tough fight for most, but top of the division? ....not
yet

Clay is a good solid LW but i think he would dominate hardcore at 145 and he can definitely make the cut hes 5'7.

Clay Guida has incredible heart, amazing stamina, great submission defense, and a very good chin - these are all hard qualities to teach and most of the current top LWs may not even be as strong as Guida in these areas. His shortcomings, such as his striking technique, striking diversity, submission offense, and striking defense are all things that can be taught. He isn't currently a top LW, but with the right camp, he could be. Look at the improvement in Joe Stevenson's game after a few weeks with Greg Jackson.

Some can argue that Guida is 1 dimensional, and others might say that Diego's stand up is greater than Guidas..... either way you look at it........... Guida is still 1 dimensional.
I was laughing at his pre-fight interview saying "whether i knock him out, or rip an arm off....." lol is all i have to say

I agree with you there, and ALL of those aspects were shown during this last fight. Most fighters would of been OUT from the headkick, either dead cold KO, or followed up with some GnP to finish.
What really amazed me was the stamina not only Clay had, but Diego to match him. The pace of that fight was just getting me exhausted looking at it.
As for being a top fighter, he is a top 10 guy in my book, but not the best, or even 2nd or 3rd. If he learned to control himself just a little bit more, and worked a little better on the ground for the big TKO's, he could easily evelavate himself up that ladder.

IF he goes to Greg Jackson in New Mex, he'll be a top fighter in 2 or 3 fights

i Think Guida is a top contender in the lightweight division. B/c he has amazing cardio and a poo load of energy, which means i think he'll put all of the energy into becoming more well rounded. i think one day guida will fight diego again but for the title and guida will be a new fighter. But he has do the work and learn more techniques that will allow him to finish fights
Do work Guida

We all know that wasnt a split decision.
While Guida is one tough SOB, he does more energy stuff and less damage.

If points were given out based how how many punches and kicks a fighter can eat Guida would win every round. Unfortunately for Clay, they're not. Sure it's incredible to see a guy get his face bashed in over nd over and still keep going but that doesn't mean he's a top notch fighter. Besides, I wouldn't get too attached to Clay, at this rate his chin won't last long and once that goes, he has nothing left.

I still believe that I'm the top fighter in the lightweight division. It's not cocky; it's confident. There's a thin line between that as well. I want to wear that strap one of these days. We're just going to be back to the old drawing board, as they say

Hold the phone, when was this guy ever a top fighter in the Lightweight division? He'll have a place in the division for putting on good fights and he's just over the mediocre line to keep his job, but no way in hell was this guy ever or still a top fighter. It's not confidence, it's delusional to think that.
