Do you feel that former Pride FC fighters are given more credit than they deserve? We've all been apart of, or at least have read, the many forums where people argue whether fighters like Fedor, Big Nog, or Crocop deserve the respect that they garner from many MMA publications and posters. Some of the biggest names in MMA history reached stardom as part of the Pride FC organization. I was and always will be a huge Pride FC fan. Maybe that's why I'm so quick defend the likes of Fedor, Crocop and Mark Hunt. But I'd like to see what everyone else thinks. Are the decorated careers of former Pride Fighters enough to cement their legacy in MMA history, or has the sport evolved to a point where current UFC stars such as Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir's accomplishments overshadow those of lets say Igor Vovchanchyn or Sergei Kharitonov?

For those who voted that the "new" UFC fighters would easily dominate the PRIDE FC organization, I want to bring up the fact that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Alistair Overeem and Anderson Silva are all former Pride FC fighters. In your opinion, which current UFC fighters could easily dominate them?

I think no matter how you vote you still have to respect these guys. The above mentioned guys are a big reason many of us started watching MMA in the first place.

Sure they do. At least the ones who are still in their prime. Guys like fedor, cro cop, nog, even wandy and hendo. It's not just that they fought in pride, it's that thy fought in pride years ago. They are of the same generation of fighters as Randy, chuck, Tito, Hughes, Franklin. They can still be competitivie, but for the most part are no longer at the top of their divisions. The new era of fighters Brock, Cain, carwin, bader, gsp, jones.... Not saying they are better than the old pride fighters. They are just coming into their pride now. Would they have fared as well 5 years ago in japan? Probably but it's hard to compare.

The reason that I created this topic in the first place, is because I noticed that there were more and more posters who didn't seem to respect the accomplishments of these fighters. These guys fought when soccer kicks, spikes, stomps, and knees/kicks to the heads of grounded opponents were allowed. Also, I want to point out that many of the blankets today wouldn't have been as successful as they are today because lnp was severly punished. Also, If you were on your back, you couldn't simply hold on and wait for a restart. You were forced to fight your way out of your predicament. In addition, many of the fighters participated in open-weight tournaments. I think much respect is due!

Very solid and acceptable argument. Most of the former Pride fighters are way past their prime. I can definitely agree. The only beef I have is when I read where posters think that GSP or Brock Lesnar could just easily walk thru the competition that existed in Pride. This is usually an argument presented when someone is trying to argue why Brock is so much better than Fedor or something like that. I just don't understand when people talk like the Pride FC was nothing compared to the UFC today. It's my personnal opinion that if guys like Tito, Franklin, or Randy had spent a few years in Pride maybe they wouldn't even be competing today. "Pride mileage" is very visible on some of the former fighters. The unified rules have extended many careers no doubt. IMO

i think that they deserve respect for all the things they have done but some have not fought very high level competition or have lost and i think thats what gives people a bad taste in thier mouth.

Think back to when Chuck was destroying people, except Randy, he went to Pride and destroyed AO then got his butt beat by Rampage! Pride fighters were and still are relevent today as back 5 years ago!!

You mean Ice Cold? Yea, he has more wins than Brock and Frank's total mma matches combined. I won't just defend Pride, but the old school UFC fighters as well. It is just that there are alot of new guys coming in who have no idea who these guys are. Same things happens in all sports, anybody hear Brandon Marshall's comments about Sterling Sharpe? There are always idiots who don't think anything of the older guys who made the sport what it is.

Though I agree. I think "destroyed" is a strong word to use when describing Chuck's fight with AO. It looked to me like Chuck was getting wrecked until he landed one of his famous bombs. I remember listening to Dana White talk about how Chuck was ready for AO and had trained to defend against his knees...just at that moment, AO smashed him with one of those knees and Chuck looked shocked.
But I give all the credit in the world to the Ice Man. His career represents what a real fighter is all about. He dominated the UFC and people were saying "Hey, Pride is where the real fighters are." So Chuck went over to Pride and jumped in the Middleweight tournament. Dana White even bet $250,000 on him to win. And immediately after his fight with AO, he went to the back and called out the "Axe Murderer." That's some gangsta S%*T!

LW - I have to disagree. I think that Shinya Aoki and Gilbert Melendez (both former Pride FC fighters) are still very competitive.
WW - I'll give you that since most of those fighters have moved up in weight class

The poll is flawed because the competition is definitely tougher today. Pride fighters then were the best, but those same fighters as they were THEN aren't the best NOW. Some have gotten much better due to the evolution of the game, most fighters get better until their bodies start giving out. An example of that would be Wandy today versus Wandy 5 years ago, old Wandy would win. But old Anderson Silva may not. New CroCop may or may not beat old CroCop.

I'll give you Gil but I'm in the crowd that thinks Aoki gets his *** handed to him by about a dozen top UFC LW's. I know plenty of people are on either side of that debate but that's the way I see it.

While you make a very good point. I would say Silva wasnt the Silva we know now in PRIDE. Shogun is a good fighter but he is def beatable. And I think Overeem could lose to a few different UFC HWs right now

Well stated man, for a large part today we have better athletes, but don't know about them being better "fighters", there is a difference.

Chuck doesn't need an excuse. He has a reason. I wouldn't even go as far as to say that he is a warn down fighter. He looked good in his fight against Franklin. Chuck has unfortunately been on the bad end of some of the most brutal knockouts of all time. As a result, his brain can't handle the trauma anymore. So yea...in that respect, maybe you're right he is warn down. But throughout his career, he has taken many hard shots and when he was younger he could absorb them, just not any more. Same with Big Nog. And just to be a prick.....Chuck Liddell IS a former Pride FC fighter. Lol
