UFC legend, Randy Couture has revealed that he winner of his fight with fellow “Hall of Famer”, Mark Coleman at UFC 109 could receive the next shot at the light heavyweight crown.
Speaking to CageReport.net, Randy said:
“Of course coming from a freestyle background I've got to look out for takedowns from the outside, particularly a single or double leg takedown but in the clinch I think have an distinct advantage and that's where I plan to take this fight. I'm going to be looking to get in the clinch and to wear him down physically, even if it means staying there for a large portion of the fight, he's improved his cardio significantly but I don't think he will be able to deal with that constant pressure when he's pushed up against the cage.”
On his last performance inside the octagon, a disappointing three round maul against Brandon Vera, Couture said:
“I wasn't happy with performance, my game plan going in was to grind him down and eventually get top position and pound him out, but he did a good job in defending the takedown. I know some people didn't think it was too exciting but I know the hardcore fans of the sport enjoy a good strategic battle. I think going up against Mark [Coleman] is a much better fight, stylistically for me to use my wrestling and put on an entertaining fight for the fans”
“From what I've been told the winner of this fight could be next in line for the title, though that's not something that is guaranteed so I really need to come in at my best and make a case for myself.”
UFC 109 is set to go down on February 6th in Las Vegas, Nevada and will also feature the middleweight contest between Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen.

That better not be true. LHW is probably the UFC's deepest division, it would be a complete waste to give either of them a title shot.
Couture: After 2 straight losses, a debatable decision against Vera and a win over Coleman gets him a title shot?
Coleman: After 2 straight losses, a win over Stephan Bonnar and a win over Couture gets a title shot?

Commercials for this fight have described it as a contender's matchup, which is pretty surprising. In the off chance that Coleman wins, does that one win put him ahead of Evans, Rampage, Lil Nog, Silva (Wanderlei or Thiago), or Griffin?

Apparently beating Stephan Bonnar carries a lot of weight. I'm surprised Jon Jones didnt get a shot after beating Bonnar.

A guy who relies on clinching and wrestling is going to beat a guy who nobody can ever grab a hold of?

I really doubt that. Couture needs a strong win over someone like Shogun/Rampage/Thiago Silva, etc before a title shot. He beat Vera by holding him for 15 minutes. And Mark Coleman, title shot? No way. There's no way he could beat any TOP 10 LHW. I'm glad he got the win against Bonner, but he relied on holding him down to win.

Jones was supposed to be next in line after Rua but blew his chances by losing to Hammill.

I dont want to see Jon Jones getting a shot anytime soon. He's still relatively new to MMA, and I'd like to see how he develops first. Kinda like Junior dos Santos. Just because someone goes 3-0 doesnt mean he gets a title shot. Jon Jones is super impressive, but let's see him fight a top 10 guy first.

Machida would KO Randy so easily.

Rogan said the same thing when he interviewed Couture last night. It does not surprise me at all. I figured this was coming, I actually thought it would be quicker then it's turning out to be. This is Randy Couture we are talking about.
Edit- I think if somehow, Coleman wins and Shogun loses, they make the rubber match there to prevent the grandfather of ground and pound from getting the shot.

Randy Couture is dreaming! I say don't give him another shot until he can convincingly beat Mark Coleman THEN beat a top LHW contender like Thiago Silva. As for Mark Coleman he'd have to do the same.

I know what you mean. I love Couture, I love what he's done for the sport but I'm over all the instant title shots and I'm over him headlining PPVs without actually fighting for a title. I realize the UFC was in a bind with all their champs getting injured but Couture even mentioning the possibility that the winner of this next fight could get a shot just seems ludicrous. Randy was still looking good and strong back in 2007 when he beat Gonzaga but to me it looks like he's gotten noticeably weaker and slower since then. I don't think he could beat most anyone in the top 10 LHW or HW divisions.
