Former UFC
Heavyweight
champion
Josh Barnett
is the most high-profile "ronin" coming out of
Strikeforce
. He was not one of the 20-something fighters that was announced as heading to the UFC from the now defunct organization and many speculated that his high asking price (he made $250,000 for his final SF bout) and his infamous troubles with performance enhancing drugs and getting along with Zuffa made him an unlikely candidate for a return to the UFC.
That may have been premature.
MMA Mania's Mike Bohn
spoke to White at today's media scrum and Dana said, "I have not (spoken with Barnett). It's probably going to happen."
Exciting news for fans of the baby-faced assassin who has not fought in the UFC since defeating
Randy Couture
back in 2002. Barnett never fought for a title in his Pride tenure but he was consistently near the top of the division and he finished second in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012.

After much speculation, looks as if Barnett is one step closer.

Just like someone will "probably" get a title shot if they win their next fight.
Wait til the actual deal is made until actually believing Dana.

Is this supposed to be towards me? Because I'm sure many rumors are posted on this boards, so I'm not sure why you're being so critical.

Despite the wacky title shots, it's a exciting time for MMA. 99% of the best fighters are now under the same roof for the first time. I'm freakin excited

Umm...he was hesitant to say anything and then said "probably" just to appease some reporters. He even said he hadn't talked to Barnett yet.

I really hope Barnett plays ball and signs a contract. I was glad to hear last week that Rebney wasn't overly interested in Barnett. I would've bet my house Barnett would end up in a King Mo type deal where he'd wrestle for TNA and fight for Bellator. He'd be the heavyweight champion of Bellator for 10 years.

just depends on the contract they offer him theres no way the UFC are going to offer him what he made in SF
and of course his past experiences also is a factor

I agree, and I'd be disappointed if they didn't aggressively go after him. Barnett is a pretty important commodity for that HW division. After JDS, Cain, Overeem, Cormier, and maybe Werdum, there really isn't anybody that is turning heads (and Carwin/Nog/Mir/Nelson have all fallen out of contention and are just gatekeepers now). He's going to be a fantastic draw for them if he can stay clean (which he has recently) because of his Sonnen-type personality and he's still one of the more well-rounded guys in the division. Even if he lost a few fights he's still a strong gatekeeper to have around, even if you have to pay him a bit extra to keep him exclusive to the UFC.

The HW division is still very thin, and yes it has got better over the past few years, and before SF was bought out it did have the best HW's in the world over the UFC. I fully agree with your post. So another addition to the division is not bad whats so ever especially a named fighter in Barnett who maybe even a contender at the very top(who knows ) If for what ever reason he dose not put pen to paper the it wont be Zuffa who be losing out they are worth billions or josh who can make money any where he goes but it will be the fans. Dana always says I do what the fans want well most of us if not all want him in the octagon.

What happened to Kharitonov after Barnett beat him? He'd be a great addition as well.

he fills out most of the Glory kickboxing events got beat recently I think, really good fighter had him as a dark horse winning the grand prix. Zuffa kind of got rid of most golden glory fighters because they would not play ball ( well the management side )
Connen, Kharitonov, theres a few more just to lazy to look it up

Like there's anywhere else to go. I know there's pro wrestling in Japan, but that's a job for Bob Sapp.

Now that it's almost a done deal, who should Barnett fight based on who's available?

Josh versus Mir will do good(once DC disposes Frank). Both there styles are pretty similar and would provide entertainment IMO.
