After a decisive defeat at the hands of 22-year-old rising star John Hathaway in his return to the welterweight division at UFC 114, it's back to the drawing board for Diego Sanchez.
Sanchez's next move is anyone's guess, but UFC President Dana White has his own opinion, and he believes that the onetime lightweight No. 1 contender belongs in the 155-pound division.
"I don't think Diego belongs at 170," he said. "I think it's easier to be at 170. He looked soft."
Sanchez actually entered the UFC five years ago as a middleweight, winning the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, but quickly dropped down to welterweight upon the completion of the season. After a strong run in the division, Sanchez made the decision to move to the UFC's lightest weight class in hopes of challenging then-champion B.J. Penn. After two wins, he got that opportunity, but was routed by Penn in a fifth-round TKO loss last December.
Against Hathaway, Sanchez struggled to mount any offense, and spent much of the fight in survival mode after being nearly finished in the first.
It sounded like White's view was cemented by watching the third round of the bout. Like many, he expected the usually aggressive Sanchez to swarm Hathaway in the final round in hopes of stealing the decision. The attack never came.
"He looked real lethargic and slow and heavy," he said. "[One] fifty-five, Diego. Fifty-five."
Though White said he has his own opinion of what would be for Sanchez's future, he added that he doesn't often directly try to influence a fighter on what he thinks would be the best path. After two straight losses, it sounds like Sanchez has a decision to make.
"He's a tough guy," he said. "I'm not his manager, but I think he should stay at 155. Listen, a loss to B.J. Penn doesn't mean you go back up to 170. It means you stay at 155 and you do what Kenny Florian did. You stay in there and keep grinding it out and beating the top guys, and you get back in line and work your way up to the top again. Diego does not look good at 170."

I like Diego a lot where ever he fights. He can definitely find more success at 155 though so he should probably go down there again. I think there are better match ups for him there as well.

agree with Dana, no shame with getting your *** kicked by BJ. I wouldnt have mind seeing a rematch with Kenny.
Sanchez vs Sherk
Sanchez vs Tyson Griffin
Sanchez vs Kenny
All those fights would be exiting. He has no shot at 170, he is too small

I dunno though, look... He had 2 really close fights with the #2 and top 5 Koscheck at WW... So he cant compete at WW now?
Maybe he just needs time to adjust back at 170.... or maybe hathaway is the next jesus christ... maybe both.
He also looked like death on a stick at 55.

In my opinion Sanchez has always been overrated in the sense that people thought he was better than he really was. When he came into the UFC he had this mystique about him, much like that of Cro Cop. He got close decision victories over Diaz (who at the time was also overrated in my opinion) and Parisyan. Then he KO'ed Joe Riggs (a feat he NEVER repeated) and people got even more excited about him. Since, he hasn't done anything spectacular except mean mug people, and take a beating. I will say this, the kid has AMAZING heart in my opinion. I believe this to be the cause of his most notable victories, coupled with an ability to press/dictate the fight with great cardio. He has the heart, he is simply lacking the skil to be great.

IDK, maybe Hathaway is a legit contender at 170. Diego is not done either way though, still some good fights for him at either weightclass.

Exactly, if he's going to fight at 170 he needs to be a muscular 170. Hathaway was clearly stronger than he was so he had no hope of getting that TD and Hathaway gave him fits with that reach. I think the Diego who was at 170 before he dropped to 155 was a much stronger guy. I think Diego would do good at 170 if he built up his strength. Bottom line is he needs to choose a weight class and stick to it. Few guys can bounce around and stay competitive, I don't think Diego is one of them.

I agree. I think if he sticks to 170 he'll gain strength and put on better performances. I don't think he has the energy or cardio at 155 that he does at 170.

In all seriousness I think that speaks to his mental state, and his belief in himself right now.

to me it looked like diego didn't even train for this fight. maybe he thought hathaway was a pushover? look up some pictures of him when he fought Luigi F. (his last fight at welter wieght) and compare him to when he fought hathaway. imo there is a big difference.
