They say speed kills, but it’s not likely anyone will be complaining about two of the fastest bantamweights meeting in January.
Former UFC bantamweight title contender Demetrious Johnson will make his return to action against former WEC champion Eddie Wineland in a fight expected to take place at the UFC on Fox 2 card on Jan 28.
Sources close to the match-up confirmed verbal agreements are in place for the bout when speaking to MMAWeekly.com on Monday.
Still feeling the sting from a tough decision loss to UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in his last fight, Demetrious Johnson will return to action in January with hopes of reclaiming a top spot in the division.
A student under legendary trainer Matt Hume, Johnson was on a four fight win streak before running into Cruz in October. Now he’ll face a former champion with a potential bout on Fox.
Eddie Wineland comes back at UFC on Fox 2 with nothing but victory on his mind after suffering back-to-back defeats in his most recent fights.
Wineland had a tough stretch facing the best of the best from Team Alpha Male, losing decisions to both Urijah Faber and Joseph Benavidez.
Now Wineland wants to avoid three losses in a row and to do it, he’ll have to go through the ultra speedy Demetrious Johnson in January.
The UFC on Fox 2 card will go down on Jan 28 from the United Center in Chicago.

Kinda feel bad for Wineland here. He's been given three-straight top-five Bantamweights, and going 0-3 in the UFC is never, ever a good thing.

Very nice, solid preliminary bout, as I don't see it takin a spot on the 4 fight main card. Demetrious by decision using his speed and grappling

Yeah do they not like Wineland? It's like they're using him for top BWs to beat and get a title shot or very close to one. After two losses Wineland should have a step down in competition. I guess the division isn't that deep but still I didn't think Wineland should get that high of a guy. He needs a guy like say Jeff Curran. Seems like Demetrious should get someone like Bowles.

This. Im a HUGE Wineland fan but no one is really gonna become of fan of his if they dont see why he is so popular. Stop giving him god damn wrestlers. Id personally love to see Kid vs Wineland or Johnny Eduardo. Someone that is a step down and will let the fans that havent seen his striking before watch him in awe. Hes one of my favorite guys because his striking is so clean but he just hasnt been able to show it. Damnit

I'm a huge Wineland fan as well. He was doing pretty well stuffing Faber's wrestling at the beginning of the fight, but the problem he had in that fight will probably show up again this fight- Faber's gas tank was too much. Couple that with the relentless pace that Johnson keeps, and this could be a long night for Eddie. I agree though, I wish they would match him up with a striker, or someone farther down the rankings.
