A welterweight bout between "The Ultimate Fighter" season one winner Diego Sanchez (21-4) and Paulo Thiago (13-2) is expected to take place at UFC 121 on October 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Sanchez broke the news to PennyJoMMA.com on Facebook. He also revealed that he has moved back to New Mexico and now trains at Albuquerque Kickboxing & Mixed Martial Arts, which is not affiliated with Greg Jackson.
Sanchez is currently on a two-fight losing streak, suffering losses to B.J. Penn in a UFC lightweight title bout and most recently John Hathaway at UFC 114 in May in what was his return to the 170-pound welterweight division. Prior to the losses, he won four straight bouts, including wins in his first two fights as a lightweight against Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida.
Sanchez has put together a solid 10-4 UFC record during his five-year tenure with the promotion, scoring other notable Octagon wins over the likes of Kenny Florian, Nick Diaz, John Alessio, Karo Parisyan and Joe Riggs.
Thiago is coming off an unanimous decision loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC 115 last month. He previously won back-to-back fights over Jacob Volkmann and Mike Swick.
Thiago now sports a 3-2 UFC record, scoring a shocking upset win over Josh Koscheck in his Octagon debut at UFC 95 last February, which was then followed by his first career loss in his second Octagon appearance against Koscheck's teammate Jon Fitch at UFC 100 in July.
Though not officially announced yet, UFC 121 will likely be headlined by a UFC heavyweight title bout between current champion Brock Lesnar and top contender, Cain Velasquez.

Thiago.
Sanchez looked poor against Hathaway, he should have stayed at 155.

The problem with Sanchez is he cant fight once he gets tagged. He was tagged early in his fight with BJ and didnt do anything for the rest of the fight, then the knee from Hathaway in their fight.

I think Paulo takes this fight any way he wants to.

Paulo is bigger, stronger, has more power, and I don't think their striking is that far apart.

This is gonna be an awesome fight, Diego is better on the ground and has a very good chin if he gets hit, strength goes to Thiago but skill goes to Sanchez and he is also backed up by his chin and possibly speed advantage, Diego to take this in a close fight.

Diego will wear down Thiago much like Kampman did.

just incase you are serious, there is a big difference between a black belt in jiu jitsu and a black belt in jiu jitsu who has competed with the best in the world, I know Diego is a brown belt in BJJ on paper buts only because he started over with the ribeiros he was easily a black belt before then and that was in the far more MMA orientated Gaiodjutsu(greg jacksons style of jiu jitsu), he went 10 minutes with marcelo garcia in a grappling war and very nearly beat him.
Don't get me wrong, Thiago is good on the ground but he is not even near diego on the ground, people forget this, look at his fights with karo and nick diaz and you will see some serious ground skill, even his fight with fitch he had fitch in all sorts of trouble in parts.

Talk about a tough fight for somebody who's lost 2 straight. I'm afraid that this one might be too much for Diego.

On a related note it looks like it's another addition of mi gente latino to the Anaheim card. I have a feeling Tito Ortiz might be added to this one before it's all said and done.

If this fight was guaranteed to be 15 minutes of ground grappling, I would take Thiago by a wide margin...

IMO this is the definition of pick 'em fight.
I would hate to see either guy lose at this point as they are both very entertaining fighters. Both fighters have a similar skill/attribute set but with the only clear advantages going to Paulo in terms of power and Diego in terms of cardio both of which should play a factor in both fighters respective game plans.
WAR TO A GOOD FIGHT!

Hopefully this being Diego's second WW fight in a row he has gotten his weight back up and has gotten use to it once again.........but i'd like to see Thiago run threw him.
