I used to think it was a great idea, lot's of classic 3 round fights would have been great with an extra round or two. However, personally, i've found most of them don't pan out and lot's of fighters are just doing the point system in 5 round fights(similar to what's killed boxing)
when i see Big Foot vs Arlovski as a 5 rounder, i cringe. if it goes 5 rounds and Arlovski has a glass chin, is it really going to be a good 25 minute fight?

It should be optional not a rule....

It depends on the fight. I would like some non main events to be 5 rounds as well, like Cerrone/Alvarez

Relevancy should dicate if its a 3 rounder or 5 rounder. Shogun/Manuwa has no title significance attatched to the fight. That should be 3 rounds. McCall vs Lineker has title implications attatched to the fight, that should be a 5 round fight.

Was never a big fan of it to begin with. The only time I want to see 5 rounds is when someone is fighting for / defending a belt.

should only be on Fox, and on pay per views the top 2 fights should be 5 rounds, that way if you put a #1 contener bout in the co-main with a title of the same weight class on the card, everyone is ready to go 5 rounds in case of a freak accident like a fighter getting KO'd by the sauna
FS1/Fight Pass events shouldn't have 5 round main events every time

I still love it. If you don't want to see 5 rounds of a fight it probably isn't main event worthy.

That's a great point. Alvarez vs Cerrone should be a 5 rounder. and like the post before you said, Alvarez Cerrone is a way better main event than AA/Bigfoot

I tended to agree that fights like Liddell/Silva should have been 5 rounders

I like it and in fact I wish all of MMA would change to 5 round fights and 7 round title fights. That would bring them closer to boxing times and give more legitimacy to the sport. It would force all MMA fighters to make sure they have cardio. It is just a sad excuse for fighters as they get bigger to not have cadio, just because they don't weight 170 lbs. It would also force more fighters to fight closer to their natural weight, because cutting weight does have an effect on cardio.

I almost wish there was some kind of a flex system where fights that are clear 30-27's would end at 3 rounds... and fights that are 29-28 could extend out to 5 rounds.
I know that there is no way to really implement an across the board rule to make that happen though.
All I'm saying is, almost everyone knows when a fight should go longer... and when it should be stopped because one fighter is clearly outclassing the other, or, both guys are completely gassed. If only there could be a rule that would allow someone to make those calls. It wouldn't work in a practical sense though...
