MMAJunkie
After going 3-0 in 2013,
Edson Barboza
believes he’s due for a big opportunity.
Barboza told MMAjunkie he’ll fight any top-10 opponent, but a trio of names stand out:
Nate Diaz
,
Jim Miller
and
Donald Cerrone
.
“It is my time, I need to fight those guys,” said Barboza (13-0 MMA, 7-1 UFC) via translator.
Of those three, two are without current bookings, and of those, only one currently is in the UFC’s good graces.
Cerrone is set to fight Adriano Martins on Saturday at UFC on FOX 10. Then again,
given his reported financial woes
, he might be convinced to make a quick turnaround. The former WEC title challenger sits at No. 8 in the UFC’s official rankings and in the No. 13 spot in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie
MMA lightweight rankings
On both lists, Diaz is a more attractive candidate (No. 5 via the UFC and No. 8 via USA Today/MMAjunkie). But he might be held back by a recent turn of events in which he turned down a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 170 when his demands for a new contract weren’t met. The move was not well received by UFC President Dana White.
That leaves Jim Miller, who on the surface is the most logical choice, if the least attractive by rankings. The veteran recently snapped an unofficial skid by submitting Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Fabricio Camoes at this past month’s UFC 168. In the UFC’s rankings, he sits at No. 9, while he takes the No. 12 spot on MMAjunkie’s list.
In case you were wondering, Barboza sits at No. 11 with the UFC and No. 14 with MMAjunkie. Of course, he is paying closer attention to his promoter’s rankings.
“I need the opportunity to fight against those guys,” Barboza said. “I am ranked No. 11, so the only guys who are above me are the top 10. I need to fight those guys to get to my goal which is getting that belt. I earned that opportunity.”
In his most recent appearance, Barboza outpointed Danny Castillo at UFC on FOX 9, which capped off an impressive 2013 where he stopped Lucas Martins in the first round at UFC on FX 7 and pulverized Rafaello Oliveira’s leg en route to a TKO at UFC 162.
After four wins in his first four UFC outings, Barboza’s momentum was halted in mid-2012 by an upset loss to Jamie Varner at UFC 146.
With that setback in the rearview mirror, Barboza is focused on an active 2014 against top competition.
“I think those fights would be interesting because they are the best one in my division, and I feel I am part of the best ones as well,” he said. “So, I know if I fight one of those names, it would be a great show for the fans who will be watching those fights.”

Jim Miller fights M. Johnson. Barboza/Johnson wont happen for quite some time. UFC wont put two LW prospects up against each other. I could definitely see Barboza/Cerrone since Cerrone wants like 6 fights this year. I think Barboza gets the winner of Cerrone/Martins.

I'm not opposed to any of those fights.

Miller makes the most sense out of the 3. All 3 sound good tho

I completely forgot about Cerrone/Martins next week. I could see them doing Barboza/Martins after he beats Cerrone

Those leg kicks would bully Nate severely. It's interesting that he wants to fight a bjj like Jim Miller, would be a true test.

Barboza can beat Miller but it's still a tough match up. Diaz beats him cause of his boxing and that's where Barboza is flawed in his striking game. same with Cerrone but he has bad fight IQ at times and might not take advantage of his better hands than Barboza

I want to see him vs cerrone. It would probably look like awesome kickboxing match but in mma rules with small gloves.

i actually think he'll have an easier time with diaz than jim miller. those powerful leg kicks will eat away at diaz. and although his boxing isn't as good as diaz, barboza will be able to keep the fight at a kicking range rather than a boxing range. i think guys that give barboza the most trouble are those that are aggressive and gets in his face...they'll go after him and leave him no room to set up his kicks, just like jamie varner did. I could see jim miller doing this, pursing him and getting in the clinch to make it a grueling fight

I disagree. I think if Barbosa was to try to work leg kicks against Nate Diaz he's going to get punched in the face 2-3 times for every kick he throws, and if you think aggression and in your face fighting is how to win a fight against this guy you just described Nate Diaz.
I think Nate is in the mix for bigger fights than that. Not that Khabib or Johnson are 'bigger' names just the beef that has been surrounding those guys makes for a better fight. I honestly think the guy is going to hold out until summer to book someone like Thomson or Grant. Rafael Dos Anjos is a name a lot of people are sleeping on as well but he is booked to fight Feb 22nd against Khabilov. Interesting times in the 155 pound division lots of new names challenging for spots in the upper echilon of the weight class. Barbosa, Nurmagemedov, Dos Anjos, Grant, Johnson. Look forward to seeing what happens with these guys.

I think that's where we gonna disagree. i think the diaz' boxing is very vulnerable against kicks especially if their opponent doesnt want to engage in the boxing range. watch the condit diaz fight where, condit did nothing but kick and move to win the fight. also cowboy cerrone was able to leg kick nate diaz so hard he fell to the ground on several occasions but cowboy was too stubborn with the boxing and that was where he lost

Gets through Miller, loses to Diaz/Cerrone.

I think Miller would wipe the floor with Barboza. I'd be most interested in the Cerrone match out of the other two though.

Edson is one of my fav fighters, I think he'll get Miller or Cerrone next... BUT before he goes after the TOP10 fighters of his division he needs to work on his stand up defense... unfortunately he has a weak chin
He comes to Bang doe.... WAR BARBOZA!!!
