Nidal Hassan killed 13 and wounded 29 people at Fort Hood, TX in the name of Islam and I didn't hear a word of outrage about that from the Muslim community other than a few token canned statements from the media. Maybe they're only cool with it when the shooter is a professing Muslim and not a convert after the fact.

Your awareness isn't the actuality. Western media outlets aren't so quick to announce condemnations by the groups associated with acts like this and I'm guessing you didn't go looking for it.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the shootings. So did the American Muslim Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs Council and a host of other groups. Really, you'd have to go out of your way to find a US muslim group that didn't condemn it.
And your's is not an unfamiliar opinion, but it's based, seemingly, on the idea that the Muslim community is one big collective. What it really is? A crap-ton of sects, divisions and interpretations of their faith.
It's almost like treating all Christians as Mormons.

Can not say I really blame them.
But it would not be connected to the shooting. The guy came in and killed people as a deranged lunatic. Not in the name of Islam.
Him converting in prison seems to be a ploy for attention; we know he will go to extremes to get attention, so I would not rule him out carving a swastika in his forehead before the fry his ***.
Not a huge proponent of the death penalty considering how many of the wrong people were sent to death, but in clear cut cases like this, I'm all for making an example out of him.
