What do you guys think about this story?
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/nat...le-heart-parents-prosecuted-article-1.2602490
This 20-year old woman has a hole in her heart since she was a baby. It could have been fixed and she would have had a normal life but instead her parents refused medical care her entire life and relied on prayer. Well she got worse and worse and is now 20, lives on an O2 tank and is looking at a heart and lung transplant because of her condition (which again was avoidable). She now wants her parents prosecuted but she lives in Idaho which is one of 6 states that allow a parent to treat a sick child by prayer or religious services alone.
What do you guys think? Should the parents be prosecuted? I don't know if I've ever heard of story like this where the sick kid made it to adulthood and now wants the parents punished. I mean it was a childhood of neglect.

Does this belong in the religion thread? If so, feel free to merge.

Put a gun to their heads and say let the power of prayer stop this bullet
Simple minded fools

What a great thread.
Faith based healing as a first choice and only choice is likely a poor choice. Personally I believe that medicine IS the tool that our lord and saviour gave us to heal our flock and should not be ignored as such.
Praise Jesus.

Tragic. But, in this case a child should be able to bring a criminal or civil suit against their own parents.

This is a hard one.. I for one think the parents are f---ing tools bags and idiot's.. But this does go into religious freedom.. Now, the kid should now be allowed to sue the f--- out of them now.

There doesn't seem to be any grounds to prosecute the parents. The people and State of Idaho let this woman down by not protecting her from nonsense. And I don't mean that religion or prayer are "nonsense." I mean that children not getting the benefit of medical science becasue of a completely discredited belief system is nonsense (without reason). You don't have a right to religious freedom that adversely threatens the health of another person.
Children aren't chattel. Parents are the legal caretakers and guardians of the child.

At what point does their religious freedom end in this case? If their child was close to death & they still refused to get her attention, do they still get to do nothing under their religious freedom?

In those 6 states, yes. We still have portions of the country living in the 19th century when it comes to certain beliefs.

There is some case here in Canada where a baby had meningitis....and the parents tried healing it with a naturopath. Now their baby is dead and they're up on criminal charges.

There have been cases where a child was taken from the parents, but I'm not sure if it was a state that had this protected.
America is f---ed like that. On one hand here is the pro life religious, but are also on the same side of faith healing that leads to death.

This case interested me because this woman is now an adult and her life has been severely affected by the neglect she experienced as a kid. At the very least she should be able to sue the parents, although I am sure money is not what she is interested in when she is in such bad shape.

And I think she has evey right to sue. At the very least to make her parents try to publicly defend their actions. It's one thing to have faith, it's fully another to disregard science and healthcare for your own child.

I think she should sue her parents for everything they have to cover any medical expenses. I also think those 6 states need to strike that from the books and and sterilize anyone who believes in faith healing. Her parents should be forced to donate one of their hearts.

Right in that same category are these "natural remedy" lunatics.
