Gilbert Melendez's desire to fight in the UFC will have to wait. The Strikeforce lightweight champion will square off with Jorge Masvidal in his next title defense, which will take place in the fall, according to Melendez's trainer Cesar Gracie.
In a Friday interview, Gracie told MMA Fighting that a date had not yet been decided upon, but that the camp had been informed of the championship pairing.
Strikeforce has not yet announced any events past September, but it is not expected to host any major events in October, making November or December the likely target for the bout.
The fight comes as no surprise. It had previously been rumored after Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker called the winner of June's Masvidal vs. KJ Noons fight a "frontrunner" to face Melendez. Masvidal won the bout via unanimous decision.
In his most recent bout, Melendez returned after a one-year layoff to crush the "Crusher," Tatsuya Kawajiri, in a 3-minute, 14-second TKO. The victory was the fifth straight for Melendez, who improved to 19-2.
Afterward, he spoke about the possibility of moving over to the UFC like teammate Nick Diaz, but it appears that possibility has been shelved for the time being.
Masvidal's win over Noons in June was his second straight win and third in his last four outings. The victory helped him improve to 22-6.

Good fight, Gil should take it but Jorge will be competitive. This is the only fight left for Gil in SF anyway IMO

I think Gil will take Jorge down and beat him up, possibly submit him. I dont see it being any tougher than his last few fights.
I agree, this should be the last fight for Gil in SF mainly cuz there isnt anyone left

+1. Gil is too aggresive for Jorge, i also see it going to the ground with Gil smashin Jorge with elbow strikes and vicious GnP. Melendez 1st rd tko

A think it should be a pretty good fight, add like to see Masvidal walk away with the W but Melendez will take it via decision.

masvidal has looked good recently, but i gotta agree with you. melendez needs to be thrown in againgst a top 5 guy.

Dont believe that "contract" crap, if dana wanted him in the ufc he would be released from contract and in the ufc by years end. The reason he is not is because there is a line of challengers waiting for a shot at the belt at 155, had bj penn still held the title and beaten a few people they would bring gil over in a heart beat.
As it is the only reason nick diaz has come over is because gsp is OUT of challenges. No one really thinks anyone in the ww division stands a chance. At this point tjey were just throwing people at him like they do pacquio.

I'm very okay with this fight happening right now. As much as I would love to see him fight in the UFC, there is just way to huge of a cluster f--- in the Lightweight Division for him join the ranks. It would just make the whole seen a lot more confusing and backed up. Hopefully the Lightweight Champion after 136 isn't injured too badly and can defend the belt within the next 3 months. By that time, it could be prefect for Melendez to cross over to the UFC and get a title shot.

An expected lightweight title bout between Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez (19-2 MMA, 9-1 SF) and Jorge Masvidal (22-6 MMA, 4-0 SF) has been targeted for Dec. 17.
Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) of the date, though a city and venue has yet to be confirmed.
Melendez makes the third defense of his Strikeforce title while Masvidal get his shot after impressive back-to-back victories.
In his most recent appearance, Melendez earned a second victory over Japanese standout Tatsuya Kawajiri and with a first-round TKO stoppage at "Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley."
The Cesar Gracie product has since pined for the opportunity to fight the UFC champion, and UFC president Dana White has said he'd love to have Melendez fight inside the octagon. But that opportunity isn't possible as of yet because the champ is still under contract with Strikeforce. And both White and Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker have dismissed a possible crossover fight even as Melendez teammate Nick Diaz was able to relinquish his Strikeforce welterweight title for a shot at UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre.
"Right now, there are no other fighters that are going to go over there," Coker said. "We expect him to continue fighting in Strikeforce and getting ready for a fight in the fall.
"Personally, I think all these guys should fight each other. But where and when, if that happens, it will be down the line. We're going to keep everything separate for right now."
With that decree in the open, Melendez has resigned himself to a bout with Masvidal in several interviews.
For Masvidal, it's the opportunity of a lifetime, and a win could put a halt to any crossover plans. So far, the American Top Team product has done well to confound expectations. In his most recent appearance, he outpointed the durable K.J. Noons, and prior to that, outpointed homegrown Strikeforce star Jorge Evangelista.

I'll take Melendez. But it angers me that arguably the top star now in Strikeforce has to wait 8 months between fights when injury free. Wassup with that?

It's wonderful that Gil has had his prime years fighting hardly fighting and facing Japanese fighters who people THINK are top 10 lightweights.

It's not a real great fight for Melendez as Masvidal certainly isn't higher up than Thomson was, Aoki was, or Kwaraji was.
Masvidal is a tough opponent, just doesn't have the resume to be fighting for a title.
But Melendez fighting anybody is good news.

Melendez needs to be in the UFC, Masvidal is not the sort of guy he should be facing. The sooner he's in the UFC the better.
And please people, don't reply to this with "it can't be done". It was done with Diaz, and it looks like it might be done with Overeem too. The contract could be mutually terminated then he could sign a UFC one. Easy.
