Wow, I just watched the Guillard vs Tibau fight that happened at the TUF 9 Finale and couldn't believe that Guillard actually won that fight. The fight was pretty boring overall but I looked up the stats and this has to be one of the very worst decisions I've ever seen. I mean one could make the argument that Guillard won the second round but there is no way he won the first or the third. I feel bad for Tibau.
First Round
: Guillard lands 7 of 26 strikes missing all of his power head shots and most significantly landing 3 good leg kicks and a good body kick. He attempted one take down and did not land it. Tibau lands 9 of 22 strikes attempts 4 take downs and completes 2 of those 4 take downs including one where he picked Guillard up, carried him to the center of the ring and slammed him. Tibau didn't do much with the TD's but those were definitely the most significant parts of the round. I would say 10-9 Tibau since he had two TD's including a slam.
Second Round
: Guillard lands 7 of 18 strikes this time getting 2 power head shots but nothing that really was significant he attempt 2 TDs and got 1 off a whizzer that dumped Tibau on his head but Guillard stood up immediately because he wanted no part of Tibau's ground game. Tibau lands 22 of 35 strikes and attempts 6 TD's and lands only 1 but again doesn't do much. The round ends with Tibau in Guillards half guard. I think this is a good example of 10-10 round but if I'm giving Guillard all the credit in the world for his whizzer throw then 10-9 Guillard
Third Round
: Guillard lands 5 of 12 strikes but nothing significant. He attempts 1 TD and doesn't get it. Tibau lands 41 of 55 strikes, attempts 4 TD's and completes 2 of them. He gets to half guard twice and actually mounts Guillard 3 different times. When the fight ends Guillard is mounted and getting pummeled by Tibau. Definitely far and away a 10-9 for Tibau, easily the most decisive round
The fight goes to Guillard via split decision. This was one of the worst decisions since maybe Bisping vs Hammil. I'm sure most of you didn't see it but I figured I had to say something since Tibau was straight up robbed and I feel bad for him and because I've heard anybody say anything about it.
If you saw it chime and tell me what you think. If you didn't then watch it.

i had guillard taking the first two rounds, albiet very marginally. tibau got some TD's, did zero damage and guillard got right back up. guillard was more aggressive and marginally more successful in the stand up. if you take the fight as a whole, tibau won, cuz he mounted the most offense. but it was all in the third round. under pride rules, it's tibau's fight. 10 point must system gives this to guillard IMO.

I don't see how Guillard was more aggressive at all he didn't do much standing up and Tibau was constantly going for the TD since that is his strength. IMO this displays the flaws of the ten point must system but at the same time the utter idiocy of some of the judges.

the grappling was a wash though, cuz he did'nt do anything with it. IMO, TD's aren't worth much, and it seems judges are coming around, if you don't do damage after them. on the feet, i judged guillard to be marginally more effective and aggressive. but it's one of those close fights that could go either way.
with this fight and a few others, i hope they re-assess how the judging works.

I agree with grapplethis.
It was close but Guillard won.
I also agree about TDs not being worth much if you don't do anything with it.

Well, I certainly have to say I'm shocked that you guys feel that way. You keep saying that TD's aren't worth much but they are worth a helluva a lot more than anything Guillard did in that fight which amounts to pretty much nothing. Even the TD's attempts showed much aggression and control than Guillard seemed to think about in that fight. If Guillard was picking apart Tibau on the feet and Tibau just went for TD's then I might agree with you but neither guy did much in the stand up and Guillard was actively work for some form of offense and found a little success. If anything the first two rounds were so close that you gotta give the advantage to Tibau for complete dominance in the third. Tibau definitely deserves way more credit for completing a TD than Guillard deserves for standing up afterward.

I can't say much I never saw the fight. But the play by play I read made it seem like Tibau was robbed.

I'm happy to see Melvin get a solid win though. He's one of those guys with a lot of talent that just can't get it together at times, I would love to see him stick around and see what happens when/if he improves.

I would hardly call that a solid win. They gift wrapped that one for him. Even Junkie seems to agree

...Can you tell I'm really bothered by this one

The stand up in the first was pretty close, Guillard landed the one solid shot with the body kick. I think with the three takedowns including a slam you gotta give it to Tibau. With a fight that close, thats when takedowns make a differnence.

I meant 'beat' a solid opponent. Wether he truly won or not I have no idea I didn't see that fight yet.

i really don't understand the variation in judging right now. i've watched hundreds of fights where Tibau wins on points, but in this fight he doesn't. Neither fighter did much to really solidify a win, but on points i just don't see how Guillard won. Everything negated each other, except the takedowns and slams. i really don't see where Guillard got MORE points than Tibau.
that is why i am having a hard time understanding the criteria for judging right now, i don't care how they call it, but call it the same one way or another for all fights. :x

Ya that's how I feel too, I just don't see where Guillard could possibly have out pointed Tibau. It also makes me think they need to score it as a whole fight and not who won what round.
