The movie that took 160 lawyers to make.

PARK CITY, Utah — Secrecy shrouded the controversial documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief, which premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival.
Rumors swirled about massive protests, prompting filmgoers to arrive hours in advance to assure they got a seat.
Security was heightened, but no threats materialized.
The festival's most hotly anticipated documentary did not disappoint, however. The revelations were almost as numerous as the number of lawyers HBO Documentary Films hired to vet the movie (160).
The scathing exposé directed by Alex Gibney (The Armstrong Lie) is based on Lawrence Wright's riveting 2013 bestseller.
Among the bombshells asserted by eight former church members: Scientology intentionally broke up Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman; it tortured some of its members in a prison known as "the hole" and subjected others to hard labor; it harassed those who left the organization and forced their family members to cut off all contact.
The film offers an intimate portrait of founder L. Ron Hubbard (or LRH as he's referred to by members) and follows the rise of current leader David Miscavige, alleging his misuse of power and that he physically abused several members.
The film also claims that Hubbard beat and threatened his first wife and kidnapped their daughter, leaving her in Cuba in the care of a mentally disabled woman. It also detailed Hubbard's elaborate cosmology incorporating space aliens, invading spirits, volcanoes and other elements that his sci-fi writing had contained.
Continued.

Just because their was a "scathing movie" won't changes people's beliefs.
all the proof in the world doesn't stop people from having faith in whatever they have faith in.
people want to have faith. why not let them?
i'd rather a bunch of scientologists running around then terrorists attacking newspapers and flying planes into buildings and suicide bomb... well you get the picture.
and Scientologists don't have priests who have been raping boys for centuries.
of all the religions, they're not the worst.
silly, but not the worst.

I'm not saying the charges are true, but they have slavery, imprisonment, physical and sexual abuse, embezzlement and fraud accusations. That would, if true, move them beyond silly.
Also not sure 'they're not as crappy as the Catholic Church' really says a lot.

Did they mention the fact that this religion was invented as a way to dodge taxes and that their many electronic measuring devices have no basis in science?

I read up on this doc recently; I'm not really seeing anything new here, all this stuff has been exposed and known about Scientology for some time now and already covered ad nauseam, hasn't it?

Lol.. After that episode I had to find out if it is what they believe... Sure enough, it is... At that point they took over from LDS as f---ed up religion for sure... Isn't that episode the reason Isaac Hayes quit and they had to kill of Chef? Because he is a Scientologist?

As OSU said all the claims being made are old news at this point. Several prominent ex members have come out stated all of the above.

No that is the one where Tom Cruise and John Travolta not coming out of the closet where Stan is believed to be Ron L Hubbard reincarnated. Issac Hayes/Chef's death is where he joins a group of child molesters called the 'Super Adventure Club'.
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," Hayes was quoted as saying in a press statement. The statement, however, did not directly mention Scientology. A response from
South Park'
s co-creator
Matt Stone
said that Hayes' complaints stemmed from the show's criticism of Scientology and that he "has no problem – and he's cashed plenty of checks – with our show making fun of Christians, Muslims, Mormons, or Jews." Stone adds, "[We] never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begins."

Yes, but I think the Scientology episode is the reason he quit. That's what I was asking.
Edit: So that was the reason.

Brick said it, but, he already gets enough credit for things so I'll accept it.

I feel bad for the kids born into Scientology, but I feel bad for kids born into any religion.
