I am currently trying to bolster my collection of Kung Fu movies and I was wondering what were some of your guy's favorites.
I have all the Jet Li and Bruce Lee movies already plus a few others, but I know there are some good underground ones that I don't know about.
Help me out if you know of any. Thanks.

Ong Baak
(sp?)was pretty good -
the Protector
not so much.
Tony Jaa has much potential, if they don't throw lousy scripts at him.

Maybe I was just really drunk when I watched them, but I really enjoyed the Heroic Trio movies. Pretty cheesy, but they do have at least one big name with Michelle Yeoh in there.

I have never seen the Heroic Trio movies. I will have to check them out.
Have seen Png Bak and The Protector. Both incredible movies. When Tony Ja kicked that lightbuld out in The Protector I was like 'holy s---!' and rewound it a few times.
Funny you brought up Iron Monkey squib, I just got Iron Monkey II last week. I haven't got to watch it yet though.
I also picked up Five Fingers of Death, Gojoe and the 36th Chamber of Shaolin.

I like some of the old-school Kung Fu movies. Things like
The Five Deadly Venoms
and especially
The Kid with the Golden Arms.

LOL! Funny you said 'The Five Deadly Venoms' I think this is the American name for 'The Five Deadly Fingers.'
When I picked it up last week it said 'Five Deadly Venoms' on box but when I opened it, the disc said 'Five Deadly Fingers.'
I think these are the same movie. Or else someone screwed up packaging this DVD.
Brick, does the movie start out with an older man fending off a bunch of guys. Then later there is a scene with a 'carnival' type guy boasting how no one can beat his fighter. The big guy beats one guy up and then later I think another comes by and defeats him with head butts?
Is this the movie you are referring to Brick?

Hmmm, those scenes don't sound familiar, but then again it has been a while.
The Five Deadly Venoms
is about five dudes, each named after a venomous critter, like Centipede, Scorpion, and Toad, and they have abilities similar to the critter. For example, Scorpion could kick like a mother, and Toad was invulnerable all over except for a weak spot. A memorable scene is when they throw Toad into an Iron Maiden to try to find his weak spot.

I think someone packaged the wrong movie.
What you are describing does not sound familiar at all.
Plus I looked up 'Five Fingers of Death' and it only mentioned it also being called 'The Hand of Death' nothing about Venom at all. LOL!
I'll have to check it out then.

It's not a straight up kung fu movie, but
Oldboy
is pretty awesome.
It's about a guy who gets taken and locked up for fifteen years without any reason. then he gets released and has to figure out who did it and why.
And the ending totally messed me up. In a good way.

I got it. That extended fight scene where he gets stabbed in the back is totally awesome. I wonder how many takes it took to get that filmed right.
It was pretty amazing though.

I agree. How often do you see a long fight scene like that filmed as one long shot?
The answer: not nearly enough

The only other one I have seen that is as good is the extended scene in 'The Protector.' Just incredible.

Just to clarify, 'Five Fingers of Death' (also known as 'The Hand of Death') and 'Five Deadly Venoms' are in fact two seperate movies.
I picked up 'Five Deadly Venoms' today. Somebody packaged the movies wrong.
Dumbasses.

Excellent, let me know what you think. If you like that, you'll love "The Kid with the Golden Arm." It's most of the same actors (they made many Kung Fu movies, and the core of actors became known as the Five Deadly Venoms). "The Kid" is my favorite movie of the genre.

Just finished 'Five Deadly Venoms.'
Very interesting flick. I thought it was pretty cool.
I liked the characters. The end scene was good too. Everybody was fighting everybody and it seemed everyone kept turning on each other.
Sweet fight scenes though. The Toad was a bad mofo till he got screwed over.

EnderWiggin - How many 'Heroic Trios' movies are there? I looked it up and I found 2 that were called the same thing. One was from 1992 and one from 1993. Are these the same movie? And if they are the same thing then what are the other 'Heroic Trio' movies called? Hopefully you were not too drunk and can remember.
Brick - I can't find 'The Kid with the Golden Arms.' I was bummed. Does it go by any other names?

I think there were 2. the Heroic Trio, and The Heriod Trio 2: The Executioners. You've got the right years.

Yea, it's "The Kid with the Golden Arm" (singular). Amazon.com has it.
