I guess we have to consider this option. Cesar Gracie Academy is en fuego. Strikeforce champions Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez delivered dominant performances in defending their belts recently. If their teammate Jake Shields demonstrates similar tenacity against GSP, then we may crown a new welterweight champion in the UFC.
So, on April 30, if Shields walks away with the strap, what happens in that division? Some options:
- GSP GETS AN IMMEDIATE REMATCH: To be honest, unless Shields absolutely destroys St. Pierre, this is the most fair option. One loss should not drop GSP more than one rung on the welterweight ladder.
- A NEW CONTENDER EMERGES: Many fans, myself included, want to see something more dynamic happen in the division. Another option would be to give a top contender -- Jon Fitch, Dong Hyun Kim, or Carlos Condit -- a shot at the belt. Though none of them are necessarily better than GSP, this course of action would bring some spice to the UFC.
- NON-TITLE FIGHTS FOR GSP: It could be interesting and controversial to force GSP to climb his way back to the top by taking fights with guys like Nick Diaz or Jon Fitch or Anthony Johnson. None of these would be a walk in the park for GSP. And, if he were to regain the belt, it would be all the more meaningful.
So, yes, no matter what happens, if Shields wins the belt, GSP is still top two in the welterweight world. However, if Dana White wants to keep the promotion compelling and keep MMA fans on their toes, he should consider various courses of action.

If he loses, it means he sucks and should drop down to 155 because he can't compete with the 170ers.

Well, that's an opinion, I guess.

I'm sorry, you're new to the forums. Don't read much into anything Jak says. He uses facetiousness to get over a low self esteem. That guys a jerk.

A bad opinion at that. Everyone knows that when you suck at your weight class you should just get out of shape and move up a weight class.

Then if he goes back to WW after dropping/moving up, he could change his nickname to the opposite of what it is now. I guess it would be "Crawl" or "Mosey"

Pretty sure that if GSP loses, he'll get an immediate rematch.
But what if Sheilds beats him twice (Edgar vs Penn) ?

GSP will be given a rematch immediately but this time to further his constant "home-cage-advantage" they will not only have the fight in Montreal but they will allow GSP to use broken glass on his gloves... :x

I believe he will go to middle weight. beat everyone, (after AS retires) as for a rematch with Shields, beat him, go the LHW beat everyone, (after Jon Jones retires) go to heavy weight, and be dominated by Jones brother. Or something like that.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever read, Jones' brother can't make HW.

just picture it in your head, zero hype leading up to fights, with gsp we assume he MIGHT finish the fight, with fitch, aint happenin. every fight would be a 5 round rape-esque performance.

GSP isn't going to lose....
Fitch, Hughes x2, Koscheck x2 couldn't keep him down and they are much better wrestlers.
Alves and Hardy were better strikers
BJ is a great striker/grappler
Shields doesn't have the offensive wrestling to take him down.
Kampman is a bad match up for Shields, good tdd, precise striking.
Gsp is kampman 2.0
Shields is much better on top than from guard

While i'm pulling for Jake, i would be shocked if GSP lost this fight.
If he did lose, i would like to see a guy like Condit get a title shot, and have GSP face a top contender for the top contender match. the winner of that match fights the winner of Shields vs Condit. Confuse anyone

so ur pretty much saying shields vs gsp again?...
I like condit but I just dont like his chances against shields, and gsp pretty much rapes fitch/alves/kos again unless he gets caught by one. I guess you could give him Diaz in a 3 round gsp gnp clinic

No immediate rematch, let someone else fight for the title & let GSP get a win or two and challenge for the title again.

I don't think GSP would get an immediate rematch unless the fight went to decision. When Serra beat GSP, everyone knew it was a lucky punch and that GSP should have won. He still had to win a few fights before he got another shot at Serra.
I think if GSP loses we will see him stick it out in the Welterweight division. He would probably then fight someone like Fitch, Condit, or Kim and then if he won that fight in dominant fashion he would get the rematch...and win.

the serra loss means nothing to what GSP has done now and should not even be brought up to this topic.........i mean gsp had already lost a chance at getting the title once......then he becomes champ.....then in his first defense he loses it.......he did NOT deserve an immediate rematch even though some say it was a "lucky" punch.
GSP is now on a 30 round winning streak with 5 title defenses.........he definably deserves an immediate rematch if he loses.
