When Jones abandons the division, via heavyweight shift or PED banishment Gus will suddenly have the hunger to compete again IMO. He's too young to hang them up. Some extended time outta the cage will convince him of this, and the absence of Jones on his way back up the mountain will give him the motivation he needs to return. I give this 18-24 months. He will be back.

Honestly I don't see why Gus doesn't bulk up some and give heavy weight a shot. He isn't exactly a small LHW and HW isn't a deep pond.

Settling down and having a child humbled Gustaffson. With some fighters it makes them want to fight more. With guys like him who can make some money outside the cage it makes them want to fight less and spend more time with their family. This feeling will pass. He will get bored but he has to go through it to figure this out. His skills have not eroded. His passion has. Skills cannot return. Passion can. I think his passion was starting to fade a bit once he got married and had a child. Then Jones just made it all worse in his mind. Guys like Gus fight to be champion. Unlike some fighters he doesnt HAVE to fight to live. He fights because he wants to, not bc he has to. I think the Jones obstacle has to be removed to entice Jones to want to climb that mountain again.

He's not all that active of a fighter to begin with. I could see him being done for good. I feel more athletes today are beginning to see long term effects of brain trauma and will begin to settle down at ages must earlier than we're use to seeing.

Rumble and Jones took a little longevity off his career, IMO. I’m a fan but have no problem with him taking time and deciding if he’s still into it. IMO, the best Gus beats the best Smith more times than not. As a Gus fan still sad though
That said, what a interestingly amazing guy Smith is. Not many guys can consistently improve with his fight miles and age. It truly amazes me. Mad props to him. Takes some serious fortitude and mental toughness

I love Gus, but he’s done. If he was to come back, he needs to change camps because he hasent evolved since he fought Jones and DC. In fact, back then was the best version of Gus we’ve ever seen.. It’s as if he forgot how to punch today. Lazy arse hip toss, when a few year ago he was taking down Jon and Daniel. He could continue for money, but he has a beautiful wife and kid. He could find something else to do or like redd said move up to HW.

I think you’re spot really minus the HW. I don’t see the same guy. I see some of those HW big hitters cracking that jaw and I’ve been a Gus fan throughout as well. Everyone is on a different click longevity wise, and I think his Mauler days have come to an end. As a fan, I’d rather him walk away now before he takes more unnecessary damage. Great career run. He just happened to fight in the tone of Bones Jones and can’t fault anyone who gets clocked by Rumble clean.

Gustaffson has only been fighting with the title in mind after that first Jones fight. He was inches away from the title, and once again he was close against Cormier. I think it bothers him deeply that he lost his chances, and now that he lost to Smith, he knows that the way back up is too long, he's not gonna fight for ranking or peanuts, it's contender spot or nothing with Alexander.

IF Gus comes back, it won't have anything to do with Jones, I think it will take time away for him to regain a desire to not just compete, but excel. Training camps are grueling, brutal affairs, not to mention the fights themselves. If Gus no longer has the fire in the belly, then he should absolutely walk away. This is not the first time he seemed to have lost some passion for the sport. While many want Silva to return, he clearly still loves competing and training...Gus apparently does not.

Gus has no reason to come back. Sure the division is shallow, but he's 3-4 fights away from a title shot, which ends up more than likely with him facing Jon again, and at the rate he fights 4 fights would take 3ish years. He's said he doesn't wanna be a journeyman (gatekeeper) so what is the point?
Also, one of his best friends and training partners just was dusted (again) in Manuwa. Jimi more than likely headed thst way sooner than later, I'm sure that's factored into Alex decision as well. I'm sure it's something they've discussed as friends and training partners

For many years 205 has been infamous for being so abysmally shallow they give out title shots to fighters on crappy LHW win streaks of 2 or less. Chuck, Forrest, Shogun, Lyoto, Rampage, Chael, Vitor ... all got title shots off crappy win streaks because even if their form wasn't flash they were "names". Gus himself got a shot off an R1 KO loss! There's a nice chance he'll be fighting for that belt again before 2020 is out.

This is a good point. This was only Gustafsson's eighth fight since the start of 2013, so he seemed like kind of a part time fighter anyway. Between all the injuries, delayed fights to injured opponents, and his long road back to title contention, I can see why Gus would hang it up.

You shouldn't just go by Wikipedia....
Phil Davis - he was beating Phil in that fight and got caught in an Anaconda choke with five seconds left in the round, had they rematched who knows.
Jon Jones - nearly beat Jones and broke the Jon Jones is a murderer mystique that he had going into that fight.
Daniel Cormier - fought him to a split decision almost won the title for a second time against a different opponent(can't think of anyone else that did that off the top of my head)
That's half of his career loses so while it's true he never wins the big one he has spent his career coming close to winning the big one.
He was a true top fifteen LHW for 10 years and a top five LHW for 5. Had the UFC run the PRIDE system of tuneup fights and series of matches he would have either become a champion or had a more established legacy but the UFC choose to be cheap and ration out his matches using him as a gatekeeper and main eventer for their european expansion. He was killed by FIGHTPASS

That is an interesting question. In the last 10 years who ate the elite lhw? Bones. DC. For sure. After that it gets muddy. Gus? Glover? Bader? Phil? Johnson? All good but none that are going to be mentioned as a great.
