), his striking coach unveils that he is opening his own gym in the Ft. Worth area called War Room MMA. Johny will train there full time along with a bunch of other guys and even some guests (like King Mo). If nothing else, it's an interesting choice and one I don't think many people saw coming.
Is this a good choice or should he have moved to an established gym? On one hand, he gets attention as the head guy, but who knows 100% how good his training partners will be. Although, Wright does drop some solid names in there.

I think it's a bad idea. It's very rare nowadays for someone from a small camp to become champion. All the current champs except for Joanna J are from established camps . . . although I don't know whether Conor's camp, SBG, is considered one . . .

Well, having a small gym helped him rise up the ranks. Alliance wasn't necessarily a big camp when Cruz became champ (WEC). The same with Weidman at Serra-Longo. So the notion that he needs an established gym might be overstated. But what is important is to recruit the right coaches especially the head coach. And recruiting young fighters and vets to push him in sparring. Hendricks strikes me as the type of athlete that best performs when he's got the right coach. So that's key.

It's a dumb move and no surprise with Johny. Historically, being the main guy at your gym is a bad move. Johny will never challenge for the title again.

It's not about going to an established gym, but getting the right coaches that the fighter can connect with in order to better take in the lessons. And the other part is teammates. You need guys that'll be able to push you.
