How did Phil Davis win the first round?

As posted in the discussion thread I scored it for Davis. I was flipping channels throughout the first round, but what I did see was Davis constantly going for takedowns. Nog stuffed them but as we saw in the Machdia / Rampage fight the judges award points for going forward or dictating where the fight is going. Aside from that, I just saw a bunch of sloppy, slow punches from Nog, he tripped, and Davis landed the most significant shot in the round - the head kick (at least from what I saw).

I don't know what you were watching. Nogueira got the better of every exchange in the first and most of the second until the takedown.
I think because he tried so many TD the judges gave it to him for the "controlling the fight" bull s---
if your a pure wrestler and you try over and over and over to land a TD and cant land it you should lose the round....I said in another thread credit should be given to TDD
I think the fact that Lil Nog didnt allow the TD and made Davis stand with him, thats dictating the fight IMO

I see where your coming from but completely disagree. What sport do you win points for defense? If nothing else happened in a fight but fighter A going for a shot and fighter B stuffing him, you would give the round to fighter B? That's crazy dude. It's one thing to stuff the shot but you have to do something with it. Pull guard, go for a submission, come up with a knee, push off and throw some punches.

AGGRESSION
, and Octagon control

Are you forgetting Nogueira was lighting up "Mr. Wonderful" in the striking category.

I think this is the problem here. "lighting up" Davis is a bit of a stretch. If landing peppering shots to Davis' arms as he blocked is "lighting him up" then I clearly don't know what that term means. Davis didn't have a single mark on his face after the fight.
and Davis didnt do much damage while he was on top, I the way our judging system works credits too much wrestlers
what do you make of a wrestler that takes a BJJ down and the wrestler is laying on top of him but doing nothing the entire round, while the BJJ is trying for subs the entire round and staying active? remember the guard work is part of BJJ.

I think a fighter that has effective TDD is dictating where the fight goes because he is forcing the wrestler to fight him on the feet.........I know defense doesnt give you points, but in every sport defense wins championships
I think when judging as an overall MMA round credit should be given because is MMA not a wrestling match

If the wrestler was just laying on top of the BJJ guy, and the BJJ guy was constantly going for submissions then I would give it to the BJJ guy. It's about being active, not responding. Phil Davis going for takedowns is active. Nog sprawling is responding to the action that Davis is imposing on him.
