Like I said on the show last night, IMHO, rankings are an alright indicator of the general hierarchy of how fighters in a particular devision stand, but they really don't mean much.
In the end styles do make fights, you can have a "number 2" fighter that can beat everyone else in the top ten (excluding the number 1 guy), and yet come out and lost to a person ranked number 6 or 7 in the rankings, like Sonnen.

Rankings are not the end all....we all know that. But, they give a good picture of who we think has shown they deserve to be listed as some of the best in their division. With MMA, anyone can KO or Sub anyone, so rankings can change faster and more dramatic than other sports. There is a reason why people are listed in rankings though...even if sometimes the rankings are messed up at any specific moment....like Therry S., he was not a top 10 fighter, but if you beat a couple top 10ers than you will be listed. Rogers may be another guy like that as he KO'd Softlofski.

I think rankings are very important within this sport, yet one problem still remains, they are still open to interpretation and really fall back on personal opinions. However with that being said, if you were to take all the rankings from the biggest mma media sources, it's more than likely that most would be quite similar, giving you a pretty solid view of how each division stands.
Listening to King Mo you certainly can understand his point of view, however it needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Afterall, King Mo is relatively new to the sport and his comments may just be out of frustration for not being included in such lists. Now I do agree with his statements about styles making fights, but just because your a prospect with a dominate style doesn't shoot you up such lists, quality victories do. Do I believe King Mo could defeat a good amount of the top ten guys at 185 and 205? I sure do, but has he done so yet? No, so including him in a top ten list at this moment in time would be absurd. You cannot bank on a fighter's upside, top ten lists have always been formed on factual, solid information such as performances in wins and losses. There is little doubt in my mind that King Mo will appear on a top ten list sooner rather than later, but until he beats some of those top guys to earn his spot on these lists he simply remains a prospect as anyone in his shoes should.

we get a general idea of where everyone stands within a division, but in the end rankings are more subjective than objective in MMA

The rankings are for entertainment. I don't necessarily care what a fighter's ranked, but it's fun determining what their rank is. The truth is, a fighter is as good as their last fight, and who they beat. Chael Sonnen beat a guy who would have been next in line for a title shot had Silva not injured his elbow and delayed his bout with Belfort. We can now rank him #3 in the world for beating Nate Marquardt who was considered #2 or #3 depending on where you put Dan Henderson. Wait, there's an issue because this would rank him higher than Maia, who tapped him within minutes in their fight. It's a game, and it's arbitrary, and should be taken as such.
