The UFC should have Shields fake an injury to get him out of the GSP fight. They then do GSP-AS on July 4th weekend. Throw Brock VS Jds on 132 creating the GREATEST CARD in UFC history.
in the 170 divison you have Fitch vs Alves for title. Winner fights Shields. Now, my thought here is that Shields can beat everyone at 170 outside of GSP. Let him build a winning streak and then if GSP loses at 131 and then struggles in 185 they can hype a huge fight of Shields - GSP.
If Anderson wins at 131 you send him to 205 and enjoy all the amazing fights before he retires.

It's just that if GSP beats Shields and then goes on to fight AS.... What happens at 170? It'd be a joke weight class for 3 years. Oh boy, rumble johnson! bj! fitch! wow.... so fun. Shields will lose to gsp and then go on to beat everyone leaving it completely boring and lame.

Probably.
Take out GSP and there's a great battle for top spot. Fitch & Shields would be favourites, but Condit, Alves & Koscheck would all have a good shot at getting the title.

Nah, watching a Motivated Penn fight the blanket in Fitch should be interesting. Add Shields, Koscheck, Sanchez, Alves, Rumble, P. Thiago, Hardy, STUN gun, Diaz. Most of these guys are pretty sweet, UFC WW division is pretty stacked, and I personally wouldn't care if he left to get potentially beat by a much larger opponent in Anderson (The height difference WILL matter.)
There are so many of them that I enjoy watching fight for their own reasons. I think most can agree that the UFC WW division is stacked and pretty exciting without GSP.

.......hell i'd say the opposite is true........without GSP the WW division might go nuts with several different champs.
yes Shields is good.......but i don't think he will be a dominate champ, i do think it might be possible for him to be champ though.

My bad. i find the WW division very weak personally . Penn is over rated. Kos-Alves got destroyed by GSP. Man, nobody in that divison could even come close to beating GSP.

just because you have a dominate champ it does not make the entire division weak.........just means he is that damn good

A) Fans don't know who Shields is. We, the hardcore fans, do. The casual's do not. The ufc makes money from casuals. He needs a win streak in the UFC so people can know him.
B) Shields will dominate fitch. Penn can be tricky but the good money is on Shields in that one.

As soon as people hear that he's a Gracie guy, trains with the Diaz brothers, and has notable wins over the guys I mentioned, people will be interested. Fans know Okami when he gets his fight with Silva. They know Daley prolly mostly cuz of the punch heard round the world. They know Mayhem from the MTV show. They know Dan Henderson, well cuz he is Dan Henderson. It doesnt take much to hype this guy. He left SF as the middle weight champ on a 15 fight win streak. When is the last time the UFC could hype the challenger to a title with that kind of a resume??
Thales Leites had wins over Pete Sell, Floyd Sword, Ryan Jensen, Drew McFedries, and Nate Marquardt leading up to his fight with Silva. But you think it will be hard to hype Jake Shields?? Many people know him.
Shields will not dominate Fitch. Fitch isnt great on the feet but he is much better than Shields and has faced guys with excellent BJJ and dominated them. Shields will have a tough time getting Penn to the ground and will get beat the hell up tryin to do it.
