I was having a conversation with a casual MMA fan and a 'less then casual' MMA fan. We were discussing MMA in general and one of my friends suggested that MMA was fake. I was at first a little confused and thought maybe he was confused with professional wrestling but upon further clarification he definitely had the perception that part if not all of MMA was fake just like pro wrestling.
I know that there has been a cross over of mma fighters that have professional wrestling history (Shamrock and Lesnar as examples) but I am wondering with a growing fan base being crucial to a new sport is organisations such as DREAM doing a disservice to MMA by blending shows with mma bouts and professional wrestling exhibitions. This in my opinion not only cheapens the sport but also blurs the lines with new fans between a legitimate sport and a form of scripted sport entertainment.

You obviously have never watched a DREAM event if you had you would know the match-ups are awesome, for example go watch DREAM 17 & then you tell me if it's "bad" for MMA.
Who cares if there doing pro wrestling fights, its only 3 matches plus have you seen the names involved?
Kazuyuki Fujita vs. Peter Aerts
Atsushi Sawada and Shinichi Suzukawa vs. Kazushi Sakuraba and Katsuyori Shibata
Josh Barnett vs. Hideki Suzuki
Btw great first post it's only taking you over a year great job.

I've heard people say that mma was fake, but I just don't see how they can get to that conclusion if they actually sit and watch an mma match.

I've noticed a lot of them are traditional martial artists that can't accept <insert style> isn't dominating.

Lol...that's true. Just the other day my friend said that any Tae Kwon Do expert could come in and easily dominate. So I asked, how do you throw spinning back kicks from your back? He countered with noone can take a TKD expert down...They can't get close enough. LOL!

Not as bad, but I was watching a UFC PPV with some friends, one of which is casual and his cousin who is less-than-casual. It was a Jon Jones fight, but I don't remember which one. They stated that his brother (Jones') would easily beat up Jon because he was bigger (and athletic I guess). I finally got them to say Jon would win but only because of JiuJitsu. Apparently size is still the only thing that matters with striking and wrestling.

Casual fans won't watch MMA, DREAM is doing no damage whatsoever.

That is very perceptive of you, it is my first post in over year but you glossed over the question completely. I am not criticising DREAM fights or match ups, I am critical of blending professional wrestling matches into their cards.
Do you think that confusing MMA with pro wrestling is or could be a problem?
Do you think that people thinking MMA is fake is or could be a problem?
I think it may be. Any pro wrestling fans that turn to MMA would turn to MMA anyway however the potential MMA fan that does not like fake or scripted professional wrestling would be turned off by the idea.

It might be a problem if the UFC was doing this, but MMA casuals and non-casuals don't know what DREAM is. If they happen to find out, it's easily explained by being Japanese, a culture very different from our own that many view as weird in non-MMA areas.

As pointed out, casuals won't be watching Dream, so it's a non-issue.
Furthermore, "is it fake?" is pretty low down the list of obstacles MMA needs to clear to win over most fans. I'd like to think most people can tell.
That being said, if the UFC were to hypothetically mix wrestling matches into their events, it would be awful. It would never happen, of course, but you can see where the guy is coming from.
