grappling? Bjj no contest... Sambo is a very effective style for MMA as a whole, since is not focus purely on grappling... Catch wrestling is very effective too...

As far as what it encompasses, probably, right up there with Jeet Kun Do (spell-check me). As for singularly effective, probably wrestling because of the current judging standards.

Alot of gyms i've seen lately are starting to do this. Different arts on different days, to support the "mixed" martial arts.

I think quite a few people are already doing that. I know that there are a lot of MMA Gyms opening around my area. They don't teach any specific discipline but a mix of Boxing, BJJ, Judo, Tai etc...

^^ yeah. in my experience though a lot of them are run by people who come from one discipline (example: ZUMA, where sarah kaufman trains in Victoria. they train MMA but the owner/main coach is Mark Zugec, who was first and foremost a BJJ black belt)

Yeah kinda but not really. Most gyms I've seen who claim to teach "MMA" still have a certain specialty, depending ont he main trainer. I think the only way this will truly manifest is if MMA becomes widely accepted in the amateur world and we see it on the collegiate or Olympic level.

well it didn't do Arlovski much good. I think if you are the best in the world at any one particular discipline......or at least the best in MMA.....then it's big bonus for you because you'll have at least a small edge over everyone. If I'm going to be the best at one discipline I would definitely want it to be some form of grappling. Because Fedor is the best Sambo practitioner out there it really helps but obviously he's needed A LOT of other tools to accomplish what he has. But if you are the best free style wrestler or greco roman wrestler in the world, like Olympic Gold Medalist than you'll automatically have a very strong base to start MMA. Like Maia is phenomenal at BJJ but very mediocre in striking, so far he's gotten away with it because he can tool most anyone on the ground. I think that will end though when he faces Marquardt who is certainly good enough to avoid Maia's subs and while beating the s--- out of him on the feet. So if I were to choose a base....I would likely not choose Sambo....I would personally go with GRW.
