The Main Card...
Title Fight
DanielsanFTW keeps title with wild fight going the distance at J-1 Global 29
DanielsanFTW def. trig by Unanimous Decision (115 -109)
Round 1
Both guys came out of the gates slow, knowing if it went five championship rounds they'd surely need it towards the end. Other than a few straight lefts that landed by the champion
DanielsanFTW (12-6)
and a couple counter punches by the challenger
trig (12-12-1)
, both guys didn't provide much once the bell sounded. It was a toss up round and could've gone either way. (All three Judges: 10-9 DanielsanFTW)
Round 2
The champion came out and controlled much of the action for the first 90 seconds. He landed some quick leg kicks to the body of trig, then scored the first takedown of the fight for either fighter. DanielsanFTW managed to gain side control but nothing more. It was trig's bottom game defense that kept DanielsanFTW from threatening with any real submission attempts. (All three Judges: 10-9 DanielsanFTW)
Round 3
The corner of trig's did a wonderful job in between rounds relaxing their fighter. It showed because trig came out and right away earned his first takedown. With the champion on his back for most of the round, trig managed to score enough ground-an-pound to keep the referee from standing both fighters up. In the last minute DanielsanFTW was able to escape to his feet during a mad scramble. That only lead to trig sealing the round with one more takedown ending the round. (All three Judges: 10-9 trig)
Round 4
With both guys trying to close the distance on the feet, it lead to a few clinches up against the cage. Neither fighter scored enough until trig went back to what had worked for him in round 3 with a double-leg takedown. It was obvious that the champion couldn't stay on his back for to long without losing another round to the judges. DanielsanFTW tried to play defense from the bottom and stay in guard. As soon as trig was able to get to half guard, he was right back into the champion's full guard. This sequence happened a few times before the referee stepped in and brought both fighters to their feet. It didn't take long for trig to fake a over hand right before shooting in and scoring once again with a takedown. The round ended with trig in DanielsanFTW's full guard. (All three Judges: 10-9 trig)
Round 5
The two fighters knew if they weren't in the lead on the score cards then at the very least it was super close. The takedowns scored with earlier weren't there in the final round. DanielsanFTW stuffed each attempt with solid sprawls and started to score more with knees from the clinch. Up to this point in the fight, it seemed which ever fighter could score a takedown or two might win this round. With neither guy getting a takedown though it was pretty clear DanielsanFTW was landing the more effective strikes on the feet. He seemed to hurt trig a few times with uppercuts. With 10 seconds left to go both guys let their hands fly, leaving the crowd standing and cheering as the final bell rang. (All three Judges: 10-9 DanielsanFTW)
The scored cards like so... All three judges score the fight 48-47 for DanielsanFTW still J-1 Global Champion.
#1 Contender's Fight
kylesid def. Tai_Mai_Shu by Unanimous Decision (115-108)
Round 1
Tai_Mai_Shu (14-8-1)
and
kylesid (4-3)
started the co-main event exchanging leg kicks. Tai_Mai_Shu responded to a high kick with a takedown but kylesid was quickly back on his feet against the cage. kylesid worked a thai clinch that lead to him landing a knee before Tai_Mai_Shu was able to back out and separate. Not much action ensued as neither man did much inside the clinch up against the fence. The round ended with Tai_Mai_Shu stuffing a rare takedown attempt by kylesid. (All three Judges: 10-9 Tai_Mai_Shu)
Round 2
The second round opened with both men cautious but Tai_Mai_Shu tried his luck at a takedown and ended with kylesid in Tai_Mai_Shu's half guard. Tai_Mai_Shu would eventually work his way back up to his feet. Again kylesid secured a thai clinch but couldn't land that big knee. The pace of the fight slows considerably. kylesid appeared to daze Tai_Mai_Shu with a high kick from close range but Tai_Mai_Shu recovered quickly and the pace slowed to a crawl once more. kylesid landed a another leg kick that spun Tai_Mai_Shu around but the round ended before he could follow it up. (All three Judges: 10-9 kylesid)
Round 3
The third and final round started slow as kylesid appeared to be looking for one fight ending strike. Tai_Mai_Shu responded by landing a stiff jab and pushing kylesid against the cage. With not much action in the clinch as both men jockey for position, the referee decides to break up the stalemate. Again the pace slows as neither man lands much offense. kylesid attempted a trip takedown but Tai_Mai_Shu defended it well. kylesid kept looking for his thai clinch and when he got it landed a couple of knees but Tai_Mai_Shu took them all with ease. Tai_Mai_Shu became desperate to score any offense he could but kylesid stifled his every attempt and rode out the final bell. (All three Judges: 10-9 kylesid)
The win gives kylesid a chance at the J-1 Global belt in only his 8th fight.
Contender Fight #1
Silvaftw def. metalmike00 by Unanimous Decision (127-122)
Silvaftw (18-7)
won yet another decision.
metalmike00 (18-9-1)
couldn't get the fight to the ground often enough and was worn down in the standup. On the ground Silvaftw worked ground-an-pound which would open several cuts that had metalmike00 bleeding throughout the fight. Silvaftw avoided several armbar, triangle, and omoplata attempts in the second and third rounds. Silvaftw worked metalmike00 with combos in the third, and the fight closed with Metalmike00 trying to secure a submission only to have the bell sound. This gives Silvaftw four wins in a row all coming by decisions. Silvaftw secured his 4th & 5th “end of the night bonuses” with getting Fighter of the Night and sharing Fight of the Night with metalmike00. (All three Judges: 30-27 Silvaftw)
Contender Fight #2
Castellammarese def. TaperSteve by Submission (103-91)
TaperSteve (6-12-1)
would have a hard time with
Castellammarese's (16-11-2)
reach in the opening frame. With Castellammarese seemingly in control on the feet, TaperSteve was able to rock Castellammarese with a right cross during an exchange. TaperSteve rushed in to finish but Castellammarese was able to defend the onslaught and clear his head and finish the round. Castellammarese pressed the action in the second round. Castellammarese shot in and scored a slick double leg takedown. That lead to Castellammarese unloading a furious onslaught of punches. Castellammarese was never able to pass to full guard finishing the round in TaperSteve's full guard. Both seemed desperate in the third. TaperSteve was able to slam Castellammarese to the floor, leading to a scramble. Castellammarese was able to lock in a tight triangle. TaperSteve defended it well but couldn't break free. Castellammarese would eventually roll him over and tighten his grip making TaperSteve tap out.
The Undercard..
-In a fast-paced bout between
Strez (2-1)
and
JSEAR94 (11-9)
, Strez was able to out-point JSEAR94. The back-and-forth, technical battle remained close through the first two rounds, but Strez used no fewer than three slams to become the decisive winner of a pivotal third round.
-The upset of the night might've been where
mmajay (6-11)
was able to knockout
skullcracker4hire (21-8)
in the third round. mmajay would overcome a one-point deduction for punching skullcracker4hire in the back of the head after being warned by the referee in the second round. In the final frame, the fight appeared to hang in the balance. After a pair of takedowns, mmajay timed a skullcracker4hire kick perfectly and delivered a crushing right hand to the ear that saw skullcracker4hire crash to the floor. The referee immediately rushed in to stop the fight, but mmajay snuck in one more devastating blow.
-
pilqs (6-2)
again showed the relentless nature that has quickly made him a fan-favorite and potential contender. Coming off a third round KO, pilqs seemed to over-match
SweetJFromTheBay (9-19-1)
from the start. SweetJFromTheBay did his best to create distance and land crisp shots with his lengthy arms, but pilqs simply pushed inside and dr
