From MMA Fighting.com
PHILADELPHIA -- Following four straight losses, longtime UFC veteran Joe Stevenson has been cut from the promotion, MMA Fighting has learned.
The move was expected following the losing streak, but had not yet been confirmed. A high-ranking UFC source confirmed it on Thursday, however.
After debuting in the UFC during season two of The Ultimate Fighter, Stevenson won five of his first six bouts and rose to become the No. 1 contender in the UFC's lightweight division. At UFC 80, he lost to BJ Penn via rear naked choke submission, however.
After that, his career stalled out a bit, as he went 3-6 in his last nine UFC fights before being released. Overall, Stevenson is 31-14 in his career, and he went 8-8 in 16 UFC fights dating back to November 2005.
In his last fight, termed a "must-win" at the time, he dropped to the featherweight division in hopes of reviving his career, but lost in a unanimous decision to Javier Vazquez at the UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry event.
Still just 29 years old, Stevenson holds career wins over big names like Melvin Guillard, Kurt Pellegrino, Nate Diaz and Yves Edwards. His last win came at UFC 104 in October 2009, when he earned a decision over Spencer Fisher.

Not a surprise, he has not looked good for a while. What is surprising is his fall from the top. Not to long ago he was thought to be one of the best 155 out there. Even Team Jackson couldn't help him out. Anyone think he will be back in the UFC? I think he will be back, some hard work, maybe some soul searching. He is only 29 so he still has a long career ahead of him. I can see him signing with MFC or BAMMA next.....

He re-emerged after tough losses against Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez with great performances and wins against Nate Diaz and Spencer Fisher, and I thought he was on the path towards another title run at Lightweight. Then he ran into George Sotiropoulos, and never looked like the same fighter afterwards. It would appear that his best days are behind him, his ship has sailed, and I'm not sad in the least to see him off to sea. R.I.P "Joe Daddy," and enjoy the minor league circuit.

The problem is he never evolved. From his first fight on TUF to his Vasquez fight, he looked the exact same. Diego Sanchez even mentioned it before their fight.

Why didn't he change, or evolve? He was at the top at one time, then boom four in a row. I thought when he went to Jackson's camp he would start to change his style, but he didn't.

I thought the same thing. I think he was comfortable and his style worked well for a while. Like Fedor, it worked for so long that he got comfortable and didn't think he needed to evolve to win.

Gosh, I still remember when G-Sot pulled that upset over Stevenson. For some reason, I had called that fight with G-Sot getting the upset (I'm so good picking upsets).
He looked pretty bad against Javier. But I still wanted to see him fight one more fight at 145. Set him up in ProElite against Din Thomas or Jens Pulver!

I thought he did make a few changes that helped him improve as a fighter after his move to Greg Jackson's camp.
But I agree with you both that he didn't evolve too much outside of making those slight adjustments to the style he already possessed and was known for.

He never seemed to use his wrestling or bjj that often.

Sad to see him go, but not surprised at all. He always put on good fights.

I see Bellator picking him up for their next tourney. Maybe even a fight with Aoki and then we can finally see that Aoki is overrated!

That Danzig KO was what broke him imo.

Aoki fights in Bellator? Sorry but Stevenson would have zero chance at beating Aoki.

His profile was removed from UFC.com over a month ago but nobody bothered to report anything or even look in to the matter.
Old news.

Not surprising and not like UFC didn't give him a chance. He got a chance to drop down and re-invent himself at a lighter weight class and he still couldn't do it. The fight with Vasquez was terrible. His job was on the line and he really did nothing. I think he was afraid of getting dropped again.

Lost his confidence bad after Danzig KO. The Diaz fight was just a matter of being in a favorable styles matchup and non evolving Joe outwrestling a weak wrestler.

I thought he could find at least a little success at Featherweight but Javier Vazquez proved otherwise. It was nice knowing you, Joe Daddy.
