Just days after he was awarded the new UFC featherweight title by Dana White, Jose Aldo has been forced to pull out of his scheduled UFC 125 title defense against Josh Grispi due to an undisclosed injury.
Heavy MMA first reported the news on Tuesday afternoon, and MMA Fighting has confirmed it with sources.
Aldo (18-1), the final WEC featherweight champion, most recently defeated Manny Gamburyan in September. He captured the 145-pound title in November 2009 when he defeated Mike Brown via second round TKO.
Grispi (14-1) was supposed to fight Erik Koch at WEC 52 earlier this month, but was pulled from that fight card following the announcement of the UFC-WEC merger in October.
No word on which bout will replace Aldo-Grispi as the UFC 125 co-main event.
UFC 125 is scheduled for Jan. 1 in Las Vegas. The event, which will air live on pay-per-view, will be headlined by Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard for the UFC lightweight title

Well this card just got worse. Two co-main events out of one card, that sucks.

2 new years cards in a row where great fights are scratched that hurt the card on paper. But 108 after it was over was a pretty decent card

Heavy.com confirmed that the injury is compacted vertebrae causing tingling in both arms. Aldo lost strength. His trainer made him take an MRI. News relayed to his management this morning. He's out at least a month for therapy.

So should they do the Koch/Grispi fight like they originally planned?

idk what the co main at 125 will be now, but i bet that puts Aldo vs Grispi on 126 which makes that card epic.

Curious to see what the co-main event for 125 is.

I was looking forward to this fight a LOT more than I was the main event and had a feeling that it would upstage Edgar-Maynard.

Well, Koch actually still fought on the WEC 52 card. So I doubt he'd be able to be ready in time.

Whoah... that would be an EPIC way to start the WEC-UFC merger. I think it's fairly unlikely, though.

ESPN is now reporting that the fight isn't officially off and that it is merely "in jeopardy."
UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo's Jan. 1 title defense in Las Vegas is in jeopardy due to a compacted vertebrae, ESPN.com confirmed with the fighter's management Tuesday.
Set to make his UFC debut after an impressive run as the WEC's 145-pound champion, Aldo, who was awarded his UFC belt Saturday prior to UFC 123 in Auburn Hills, Mich., experienced tingling in both arms while training in Brazil, said Aldo's representative Jorge Guimaraes.
"He's heartbroken," Guimaraes said of the 24-year-old mixed martial artist, whose 18-1 record lands him near the top of most pound-for-pound lists. "But he said he doesn't care about the injury and he'll fight."
At the behest of his trainer, Andre "Dede" Pederneiras, Aldo underwent an MRI after it was clear the fighter was operating at less than full strength in the gym. Doctors recommended that Aldo take a month off from training to focus on physical therapy.
The vertabrae is "compacting the spine, and they noticed he lost a lot of strength in the right arm," Guimaraes said.
Heavy.com first reported Aldo would not compete at UFC 125 against 22-year-old challenger Josh Grispi (14-1), which features a lightweight championship in the main event between titleholder Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard.

Me too! I feel like my f---ing dog just died or something. Nelson/Carwin was devastating and this is worse!
No HW's on the card at all.
I should have went to the superbowl card instead.

I think I'll sell or more likely have to give my ticket away and just wonder around Vegas and get drunk.
Don't think I want to sit through 5 hours of mediocre fights for that main event.
