Francis Ngannou
’s slow climb in the heavyweight division is over. It’s time for him to sink or swim.
Ngannou, the top prospect, will meet former heavyweight champion
Junior dos Santos
at UFC 215 on Sept. 9 in Edmonton, the UFC confirmed today on Twitter.
The news was first reported
by the Edmonton Sun.
Ngannou (10-1) has won all five of his UFC fights by finish. The Cameroon native, by way of France, is coming off a first-round TKO of
Andrei Arlovski
at
UFC on FOX 23
in January. Ngannou, 30, recently moved to Las Vegas and has been doing some training at the UFC’s new Performance Institute.
Dos Santos (18-5) is coming off a first-round TKO loss to
Stipe Miocic
in a heavyweight title fight at
UFC 211
in May. The Brazilian star has alternated wins and losses going back to 2012. Dos Santos, 33, held the heavyweight belt in 2011 and 2012, famously knocking out
Cain Velasquez
at the first UFC on FOX.
Sources said dos Santos vs. Ngannou was originally targeted for a pay-per-view card that was scheduled for Aug. 19, but that event was scrapped earlier this week.
Also announced was a light heavyweight title fight between
Tyson Pedro
and
Ilir Latifi
.
No main event has been made official yet for UFC 215.

Of course but it narrows the gap of hitting your potential during prime years forsure. JDS 33 vs Francis 30 is alot closer than I had first imagined.

Yep, this is awful for JDS. Who is JDS hanging around where they are telling him this is a good fight to take after being TKO'ed by Miocic?

Might as well dig the grave for JDS after this one.

Your optimism is commendable but JDS is about to go to sleep. The more I think about this fight though the more it is kind of necessary. Heavyweight has no contenders, Ngannou gets a ranked opponent and no one knows where Cain is so if Ngannou wins it sets up a Ngannou/Miocic fight if need be.

Wish Cain hadn't taken so much of Cigano's soul in those rematches.
Without having those fights and what they did to him .
Who knows how many years JDS woulda had.

Ngannou will be expected to win here but JDS is capable of the shock, but I doubt we ever see the same Junior Dos Santas again. Titleshot next for Francis here and I think he will do it too.

Since when was Latifi unranked? Also Ngannou v JDS makes little sense to me because JDS is so inconsistent that if Ngannou destroys him it might not be a reflection on Ngannou, considering his biggest win was Arlovski and before that he was fighting Anthony Hamilton he is unproven yet he's basically getting a title eliminator against one of the most inconsistent fighters

Cambodian dude I met once told me a story about his mom giving his younger brothers identity (who had died)to him as a means to get him outta the country. during Vietnam conflict.
He told me he lived under his brothers identity for years to afraid to tell the truth for fear of being sent back.

MMA years and actual age are two totally different things. A guy at 30 could be completely shot because he's already fought for 10+ years and his body is done. Especially someone who has been in wars like JDS. Other guys like Romero come to the game late and bloom in their 30's, even late 30s.
Tough fight for JDS but it is the right fight. Gotta set up Ngannou for a title shot sooner rather than later.
