Justice Thread

I would have been pissed if he got manslaughter instead of murder, I definitely believe the conviction was appropriate. But for a kid who comes from a decent family and wasn't already on a highly criminal path, I believe reform is possible. Serving 20 years at that age is practically a life sentence. Life without parole for a teenager is tough for me to swallow.

Depending on the context, I can definitely be perfectly fine with it....but, I do still have the ability to understand where you're coming from. There are success stories, and I can respect that.

Texas teen who fatally stabbed track athlete at school meet found guilty and sentenced to prison

I think justice was served appropriately. Life in prison was probably too much for an idiot kid who made a terrible, reprehensible decision. And he can apparently qualify for parole after serving half of the 35 years, so this gives him a realistic chance at reform.

100% the right verdict and application of Texas law.

Texas doesn't do tiers of murder (Murder 1, Murder 2, Murder 3)

You either have:

- Capitol Murder (which this wasn't... that's reserved for murdering cops, little kids or murdering someone while committing other felony level offense)

- Murder (which this was... it doesn't require premeditation,, only that you do something with intent that could reasonably kill someone)

- Lesser charges like involuntary manslaughter or negligent homicide.

The reason this was murder is because he brought a knife to a track meet and he unnecessarily escalated a situation to the point where he plunged the knife in another person's chest.

In Texas it doesn't matter if he had planned on doing that when he woke up that morning., what matters is that he did something that could reasonably kill someone without a justifiable reason to do it.

And I agree that 35 years is reasonable.

He wasn't going to get death or life without parole because it wasn't a Capitol Murder trial

99 years would have been excessive when it was a single blade wound to the chest that happened to strike vital organs. I'd wager that 6/10 times of the same situation plays out, that knife doesn't strike vital organs.

I wouldn't have been upset if he received a longer sentence, but 35 years seems reasonable given all of the context.

Would you honestly say the same if it was your kid that got killed over a shove when the other kid was the aggressor? I would want to kill him with my bare hands. Anyway, I'm done here.

Given the way all of this has played out (Karmelos family living large off GoFundMes, etc) I'd most likely have killed his entire family and would have died at the hands of police long before the trial took place.

If you remove all of that from the equation though? I would probably accept this verdict given all context. I've trained my daughter up on not shoving mentally challenged people who are reaching into their pocket threatening, "bad shit" if she touches them.

In no way am I saying Austin deserved to get stabbed, certainty didn't deserve to die. He did call a bluff that ended up playing out about as badly as it could have played out for everyone involved though.

Teen or not, I feel the same as you.

I've been following this closely since it happened. I don't give a shit if you're a teen and people try and use that as an excuse for leniency.

He killed a bright young man who had his whole future ahead of him because he couldn't control his emotions.

Fuck these, he's just a kid, excuses. He took an innocent life and deserves the same IMO.

So tired of all the excuses.

I didn't read that he was mentally challenged. I only read that he was the aggressor and killed someone because he got shoved.

You have to be mentally challenged to react that way to people asking you 12-15 times to leave a place you aren't wanted and then trying to toss you.

On Austin's side... if someone is reaching in their pocket saying, "if you touch me, bad shit is going to happen to you!".... maybe go grab a coach rather than rolling the dice and touching the kid?

(Of course that is shitty Monday Morning QB'ing. I get why Austin did what he did. I might have done the same at 17)

Again, you don't "deserve" to get stabbed, certainly don't deserve to die. Just saying it all could have been avoided if either side handled it better, and that was likely factored into sentencing

I mean, I might be heartless compared to others, but I found it quite easy to not be a violent criminal. I'm not saying he got off easy; 35 years is a long time if he serves it all. I'm also not saying there is no such thing as redemption stories, but I will say most people's mindsets on severity would change if it was their own child.

We're defending the point that the killer was a kid that thought irrationally, but not the victim? Bottom line, he got stabbed to death over next to nothing.

Anyway, I'm only posting about this to say that I would not be against a teen making that kind of choice getting life. Not saying that he got off easy.

If he had repeatedly stabbed him, I would have wanted the death I penalty. Ditto if Austin had turned to get a coach and he was stabbed in the back.

He said, "if you touch me, bad shit gonnna happen to you" and reached in his pocket line he had a weapin..Austin decided to call the bluff, Karmelo decided it wasn't a bluff and stabbed him once and ditched the knife and ran.

If the stab didn't hit vital organs he probably gets charged as a minor and spends months in juvie.

It unfortunately killed Austin, so now he gets 35 years.

35 years should be enough time to think about what he did.

It's a fucked up situation all the way around. Karmelo 100% deserved MURDER (not manslaughter), but I get where the judge goes 35 years instead of 99.

I'd also have been fine with 99 though, which i did say earlier.

This pos chose to enter a place that is known he wasn't allowed, tried flexing looking for a fight. He knew exactly what he was doing, there's no fixing something that has been proven will never be fixed.

Enjoy the 35yrs you pos, and I hope some dude 5x his size makes him the little bitch that he is.

I get seeing both sides buckey, but seems you're doing it just to stir the pot.

Coulda, shoulda, woulda, is pointless. A 17 yr old killed another kid for absolutely zero reason. He was 100% at fault and made the decision to put himself there.

You need to get tf out of Illinois, it's warping your brain. Not in a good way.

How many shootings did you have last weekend?

so basically you just did another 20k words and are fine with anything

As long as he was convicted of murder and sentenced to a meaningful amount of time, yes

This, "he deserved the death penalty!" is a wild overreaction.

He didn't randomly stab him unprovoked while he was going to the water fountain.

They had a confrontation and he told him, "if you touch me, really bad shit is going to go down", while reaching into his pocket like he had a knife or gun. Kid decided to roll the dice, and other kid decided to go full retard wanna-be gangster and is now a convicted murderer as a result.

Point is, there were mitigating circumstances. It wasn't a textbook "max penalty possible" scenario.
