was watching the kongo vs mitrione and for the first 2 rds. kongo kept backing against the cage wanting mitrione to exchange. also noticed thats how he dropped velasquez and pat barry against the cage. was jus wonderin why he does it so often.? does the cage give him extra push to his strikes.?
in this gifs he backs against the cage ready to throw a similar uppercut like he did against barry before getting clipped.
Thoughts.???

Wouldn't exactly describe that as usage of the cage in any particular way, although it would seem that's his style. I think it's more or less his form of counter striking. He likes to keep distance and throw strikes while moving back. He does have an 82" reach, so him moving backwards can be very deceptive; in that, he still has the ability to tag you while doing so.You move backwards enough and the cage is going to show up.

Mittrione and Barry train with Pettis. By putting his back against the cage, Kongo prevents them from using the superkick.

Another thing this style does for him, and Machida uses it as well, is it creates frustration for his opponents. They get frustrated, f--- up, get tagged.

Haha, I don't know if Kongo could have told you what year it was at the time much less known he was backing into the cage, but I agree that it just seems to be his counter punching style.

Which is why, I stated previously, I don't think he's utilizing the cage specifically. Nor did I suggest Kongo knew he was backing into the cage in the HD fight. It's his style in that case I was pointing out, not the cage. The cage is just there, because of his style it's inevitable he'll eventually back into it.
Don't get me wrong though, I know what you're saying, Kongo was rocked.
Actually that points to another benefit of his style. When a fighters rocked, natural instinct is to back off. This being second nature to him already, because of his style, it would allow him to fight back on instinct while hurt.
You can probably guess already, who I got for the W in the Hunt fight. HA !

Kongo is afraid of going to the ground and he feels more secure when his back is near the cage. He won't fall back from a shoot attempt, it gives him the opportunity to fight of the td attempt with a clinch. So when his back is against the cage he feels more confident about throwing a hard strike. Of course this is all just a guess and I have no idea if he's thinking this way at all, but there's a guy in my camp who does the same thing. Keep in mind that I'm bored and am just talking off the top of my head.

No worries man, I understood you. I used that fight as an example, because it highlighted what I was pointing out about his fight style. I just wanted to clarify my point; which was, descibing his fight style, and how that affects our perception of what we're seeing, more so than I wanted my points to be interpreted about how the cage comes into play.
I do realize there is more than one way of looking at that fight specifically, I didn't want my points to be lost. ( cause they're such damn fine points
