'The Ultimate Fighter: Live' ratings: Episode No. 5 averages 947,000 viewers
by John Morgan on Apr 09, 2012 at 4:55 pm ET
Ratings for the fifth episode of "The Ultimate Fighter: Live" were down slightly and resulted in an average audience of 947,000 viewers, which marks the smallest ratings figure in the 15-season run of the series.
Friday's episode, which featured the season's fourth opening-round matchup, followed the 1.1 million viewers who tuned in for the fourth episode.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the figures with an industry source.
"The Ultimate Fighter: Live" features UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and former WEC titleholder Urijah Faber as opposing coaches. Following a two-and-a-half-hour debut episode in which an initial group of 32 was whittled down to 16, the series continues with a fight each week. After pre-taped content, the lightweights-only show concludes with a live fight.
In the fifth episode, Team Faber evened up the season series at 2-2, with Mike Chiesa earning a unanimous-decision over Team Cruz's Jeremy Larsen.
Spike TV began airing "TUF" in early 2005, but as part of the UFC's mega-deal with FOX, the series moved to FX in 2012. With the move to FX, Spike TV is now counter-programming the live shows with "The Ultimate Fighter Fridays," which features past episodes of the show.
This past Friday, Spike TV featured two episodes of "The Ultimate Fighter 9." The replays drew an average audience of 408,000 viewers.
Meanwhile, FX followed "TUF: Live" with the first episode of "UFC Primetime: UFC 145," which earned 462,000 viewers.
The "TUF: Live" episode-by-episode ratings include:
"The Ultimate Fighter: Live" episode No. 1: 1.3 million viewers
"The Ultimate Fighter: Live" episode No. 2: 1.1 million viewers
"The Ultimate Fighter: Live" episode No. 3: 1.2 million viewers
"The Ultimate Fighter: Live" episode No. 4: 1.1 million viewers
"The Ultimate Fighter: Live" episode No. 5: 947,000 viewers

I'm not surprised. This season has been lacking something. I've been watching but haven't been as interested or as invested as previous seasons. I think these are the reasons.
1. It's on Friday night. I do not want to be at home on a friday night just to watch TUF. Isn't Friday the worst night to put on a TV show statistic wise. Wednesdays were so much better.
2. If the "Live" thing doesn't work across the board then don't use it. It's live for the east coast but not for the west coast and the fights take place in Vegas. If you think about it, it makes no sense. This goes hand and hand with it being on a friday, guys aren't going to wait until 10 to watch a fight that isn't even live, takes the fun out of it.
3. TUF needs to do different weight classes. Is it just me or do they do a tad bit too many seasons with Lightweights and welterweights. Those weight classes are already jam packed. The one time in a long time they middleweights everyone eventually dropped down. I think the next season should be Heavyweights and Light Heavyweights cause in the event that the guys drop down they drop down to middleweight and light heavyweight which we all know both those weight classes need some new talent.

They should do 2 fights a show and less drama more training and fighting. Only show serious drama if needed.

I've only seen a few episodes, and it is strange to me. With this format, I can't really get into the fighters, where they are from, or anything like that this time. Hard to really support a fighter on a reality show, knowing very little about them.
That, and it being on Friday at 10pm EST, when I tend to want to be drinking beers out with a few people, instead of sitting at my TV. I also didn't both setting my DVR for the season either.
I'll maybe catch up later. If I feel like it.

Who cares what the ratings are? This has been one of the best TUF seasons ever. Hardly any gay drama and very competitive fights so far. Plus the coaches are incredible (Cruz might be the smartest coach they've ever had). I have zero complaints about this season and love the live fights. Plus you have to figure in the fact that they switched channels and not everyone cares about MMA. I don't even know if I can watch the fights live, I just DL it the next day.

I agree, changing it back to mid-week would be smart. It was nice because it broke the week up

If I am correct Wednesday is the most competitive day for TV. There are so many shows with fan bases on Wednesday it is hard to compete. I know for me personally I wouldn't pick TUF over South Park. I think a good day would have been Thursday or Tuesday as Monday is also competitive.

Wednesday from 9-10 has literally nothing other than South Park. Plus, South Park re-runs at 11PM and plenty more through the week, and they only have 6 episode half seasons.

I love the timing of Bellator. Back when I watched boxing, before I got into MMA, ppl knew not to bother me between 7-9 on a Friday night since I was watching boxing...I'll go out after that. It's kinda like a blast from the past with that.
But TUF is on too late. I'm going out by then and putting TUF on DVR. It's cool that it doesn't run at the same time as Bellator I guess, but they didn't pick the best night/timeslot for sure. I think I only caught the first episode live, all the others on DVR.

I'm just happy with the lack of stupid drama that existed in past seasons.

I haven't seen one of these episodes live yet. It kind of defeats the purpose of having live fights if you are going to air the show when your whole demographic is away from their tv and are going to see it later, if at all. Having said that, I like the live format and think it would be great back on its Wednesday time slot. I also think this season has a lot of talent and the fights have been great. I am really enjoying it, but Friday nights are killing it.

I think the fight starts too late. It seems the fight doesn't actually start until about quarter till the hour and if it goes to decision they are cutting it way too close on time. Couldn't they fill in that extra time with some interviews with the coaches or what have you if it goes too quickly?
