Being considered one of the top welterweights of all time does not seem enough for Matt Hughes. The former welterweight champion who is set to fight arch nemesis Matt Serra at UFC 98 in May is now considering a move to the middleweight division.
Speaking during last Thursday’s UFC Fight Club question and answer session in the days leading up to UFC 96, Hughes brought up the fact that this is a move that almost happened back in 2005. Hughes stated that if Evan Tanner had defeated close friend Rich Franklin at UFC 53 for the middleweight championship it would have been Tanner rather than Franklin who would have coached opposite him on the second season of The Ultimate Fighter. Since Franklin won and the two were close friends they agreed not to fight after the show had finished taping.
Hughes was quoted as saying that when he was welterweight champion he had always considered a jump up to 185 and reiterated his desire to fight Tanner in a “champion vs. champion” bout that would have taken place shortly after TUF 2 was completed. The UFC had a deal in place for Hughes to go head-to-head with Tanner but Franklin had other ideas.
While many consider Hughes to be on his last legs of a career that has spanned 11 years and has seen him defeat such fighters as Georges St. Pierre, B.J. Penn, Carlos Newton, Royce Gracie, Frank Trigg and Sean Sherk, Hughes feels otherwise.
The man who has had welterweight title runs from November of 2001 to January 2004 and October 2004 to November 2006 has some unfinished business first at 170 before he thinks about moving up. A long awaited bout between him and Serra will finally take place in May after being postponed back in December of 2007 due to a back injury sustained by Serra. The two were opposing coaches on season six of The Ultimate Fighter and there is no love lost between them.
Although Hughes is 1-3 in his last four fights he believes he still has something left in his gas tank and
would like to take on middleweight champion Anderson Silva
once his fight with Serra is in the record books. Hughes said he still toys with the idea of moving up to 185 and that Silva would be the man he would like to face. Hughes who is 42-7 overall and 15-5 in the UFC is on the last fight of his contract but stated that he has no intentions of fighting anywhere else and that the UFC is well aware of that.

Hughes is tough enough to fight some of the lower level MW's, but if he thinks he can hang with any of the top 5 he is living in a fantasy land. I wouldn't mind seeing Hughes fight someone like Chael Sonnen or Nate Quarry or Ed Herman. Those fights might be cool.

I don't know if I can take that seriously? Is Matt being serious? I get the feeling that as soon as he convinces anyone that he's considering a move to 185 Ashton Kutcher is going to jump out and say "You've been punked". And then we'll all feel stupid.

Interesting that he's going up instead of trying to cut to LW. I wouldn't think it would be a huge cut for him and the competition will be more forgiving than at MW.

What I find funny is that Hughes really thinks he can take on Anderson.

This really isn't anything new. He's been saying this for a few years. He might fight somekind of superfight up there but he is looking at the most three more and he's done anyway.

He wants to take on Anderson Silva...did he lose a bet?
We all saw what Alves did to the guy, Anderson will put Hughes in the hospital.

When I first saw this story I didn't even bother reading it....just like the stories that say Ken Shamrock is fighting again.
Maybe Hughes is just wants to even things out....and by that I mean take his 15-5 UFC record and turn it into an even 15-15. We all could probably name 10 MW's that would beat Hughes with little trouble.

Whats really funny about this to me is when Hughes first mentioned this possibility (a couple of years ago) people seemed to think he could hang with or even defeat Anderson  . Now everyone seems to realise his chances of that happening. I've always thought this was a bad idea for him.

HE is way too small for MW, hes only 5'9 and maybe a little smaller than average WW, I'm probably the only Matt Hughes fan in this Forum, but If he does move up RIP Matt Hughes :?

exactly! He's way too small for middleweight, if anything he needs to cut down to 155 if he can still do it and wants to stick around in the UFC. Guys like Anderson and Nate would literally make him look like a beefed up midget fighting a grown man and get beat down accordingly =)

Not really a Hughes fan but I have all the respect in the world for what he has done inside the cage. A move to MW is a bad move for him. Especially if he is trying to fight the top tier guys. He can't even hang with the top WW anymore. Quit chasing the big money fight nobody wants to see and either gatekeeper it up or hang 'em up.

Let him move up. After showing his real colors I would love to watch him get tooled a few times.
